Ran into this question on Facebook, and a lot of the answers were not necessarily what I'd expect. Scott Walker and Björk came up for example.
Are there artists that
1. you really like, but
2. rarely or almost never actually listen to, because they're in some way (musically, emotially, otherwise) too heavy for you?
I could think of a couple. Ministry especially is funny in the sense that I occasionally listen to stuff that could be considered way more extreme. But something about Ministry just tends to leave me gasping for breath and tired, even though I really like their stuff.
If you LIKE it, you woukd listen to it with at least some regularity. Maybe you're asking music you can appreciate, but don't listen to very often at all.
As for me I listen to a lot of heavy music be it heavy metal, driving electronica, or emotionally heavy as some of the examples suggest.

I prefer not to be emotionally fatigued every time I listen to music.
Also, Immortal Technique's "Dance With The Devil" always gets me shook up, but I wouldn't add him to the list since most of his other stuff is goofy Trutherism.
I really like the National, but I rarely ever listen to their albums. It just seems like such a chore sometimes. The music is gorgeous, but it's like listening to one long sigh.

Opeth, at least their early stuff - I can appreciate what they do musically, but too much growling for me to handle in anything other than small doses.

Doesn't have to be every day. Or even every week. But I would suggest that if one doesn't go back to it with a certain amount of regularity, you don't really like them. You just appreciate something about it.
A personal example. There is something I find genuis about Primus. But I never flip them on cause I'm missing them. It's just those amazingly rare situations where I hear it, and it totall fits.
To that point, wasn't it Primus that was the song Hank was reviewing the case to this Sunday on Breaking Bad?
Dave Matthews is another good example for me. I like one song of his, but I don't think he's bad. I think he's a true artist. I just don't like him save for that one song.

Love Opeth. But yeah a good example for many.

Still waiting to come across a band that makes me say "yeesh, that's too heavy". It's not like I listen to screamo or black metal all day, but I generally can appreciate it for what it is. Usually if the vocals are too growly I don't find it too heavy, I find it funny like cookie monster style. I suppose if I read the lyrics I might find it too 'heavy', but who has time for that.
Sort of a tangent to this conversation, but related, I think - I have a lot of music I want to sit down and actually listen to - not as background noise, not in a car when I need to pay attention to the road, not when I'm working, etc - stuff I genuinely want to either savour, or listen critically to. The problem is that its heavy (in the sense that it's important to me and needs dedicated time and space), but not heavy enough to displace other higher priority tasks.
So in that regard, I have lots of music I really like, or that I'm pretty sure I'd really like, that I never listen to for lack of time to do it properly.
