I think it was both the actor and the generation of people watching it. The concept doesnt translate all that well to a modern generation and further the actors cant carry the mail.
I agree with you though, I saw the trailer and my first instinct was: that looks bad and it should feel bad.
It might just be that the show and the concept need to find its own feet, but they shouldnt have tried to borrow from the past and shoehorn it all together.
