I agree, goaltending wins playoff hockey... winning playoff rounds is a combination that is also tied to the depth of your teams skill players playing a vital role, especially skilled centre depth.
Goaltending can still be addressed, it does not have to be either or.
Calgary can still trade a quality D man + another pick for a new goaltender if we don't find that goalie in UFA.

Would a trade with the Hawks work?
Stone + Frolik + Smith for Crawford + Anisimov

Why would Chicago trade for 3 guys they don't want?
If they move Crawford and/or Anisimov, it would be for picks and prospects.
All you are doing is trying to fill a large Calgary need and move out players you don't want.
Chicago is not even saving any money.
Crawford could be moved for a 1st round pick.

Crawford is not getting a 1st round pick from anybody with the season he is having. 6M Cap is a big chunk to take on for any team thats why I see him being traded for a Frolik or Stone type contract. Hawks still save some cap.

But what is Chicago's motivation to trade him for fungible players? Better to keep him and hope he plays better. Then next year at the deadline, they can move him as a rental.
Crawford has a pedigree which would be worth something. He may be a bit rusty right now, but he hasn't been horrible considering how bad Chicago's defense is this year, likely the worse in the NHL.
In any event, Chicago has indicated they will talk to their core in the summer if they want to stay around for a rebuild. I doubt any are moved this year unless someone entices them by overpaying. And that's not Stone, Frolik and Smith, who combined likely have negative value.

Trade works amazing for the Flames but does absolutely nothing for the Hawks at all

Flames need to pick up a buy low 3rd string goalie. They are a bad break away from needing nhl cover and all 4 guys in the system are getting lit up. Schneider is the only one who had a decent stretch but the echl goalies are getting lit up lately too.

Not exactly. Tyler Parsons has played only three games this season, and was excellent in his last start before getting injured in October.

Speculation with Schneider's return to the ECHL was that Parsons would be back this week. But it now sounds like Schneider was sent down to get in some games because he has not played since 1 December, but would be back in Stockton next week.

Ouch - tough. Gillies needs games - leave him in Stockton. But Schneider needs games - which he won't get here. I don't see calling Parsons up.

That leaves a trade if Smith can't go?

Derek Wills on the FAN 960 now saying the coaches don't believe Smith's injury is serious. I think he tweaked something on that set of saves in the first minute of the game and tried to play through it. Hopefully he doesn't miss any time.

You should. Mike Smith and David Rittich are the Flames best options to win games.

While one doesn't wish injury on a player, if Smith was hurt and tried to play through it, it can make fans who were hoping he was turning his season around feel better about his crappy game.
On the other hand, it also means he's a guy who gets injured on pretty routine plays. See also last year.

Smith seems like a great mentor and support for Rittich, I'd prefer he stay healthy. But I don't think the Flames have a viable 3rd goalie if him or Rittich goes down right now. It would make sense to bring in a guy, like they did with Poulin a couple years ago, who can stabilize the crease in the farm and be there if they need an emergency callup. Stockton seems like a solid team that is getting bad goal tending right now.
But probably makes sense to give Parsons a month or so first and see how he's playing after working through his illness/injury, don't like the idea of sending Parsons straight to the ECHL but the team has to come first right now with the kind of season its shaping up to be if he struggles down there like last year.

Another team would have to put a goalie on waivers in the next two days for that to work. Only Arizona and Carolina are currently carrying an extra goalie. Darling has already cleared waivers, so he could be sent down without going through waivers again. That leaves Pickard as the only possibility if Arizona decided to put him back on waivers in the next two days (which is possible considering he has yet to play a game for them).

Treliving: Hi Stan, can I interest you in a trade that greatly benefits me while greatly affecting you negatively?
Bowman: Sounds great! Where do I sign?
Crawford is a legitimate #1 starter and Anisimov has 3 straight 20 goal seasons. They can be packaged for significant picks and prospects for their rebuild instead of 2 injured players with 1 year left and a UFA goaltender with the worst starting numbers in the entire NHL..
