Just gonna leave this here...
2017-18 Western Conference Champions Vegas Golden Knights
J. Marchesault
C. Eakin
T. Nosek
R. Carpenter
O. Lindberg
|
And they didn’t win a Stanley cup.....
Point well made

Karlsson plays the Knights RW I think
But still the point I'm trying to make is even if:
Marchesault, Karlsson, Eakin, Haula, Bellemare can take their team to the cup final...
Monahan, Lindholm, Backlund, Jankowski, Ryan can do the exact same.
Point is it doesn't really matter what your center depth is, as long as it's there and you have a good supporting cast around them.

I don't really want Lindholm on the second line though. The top line is one of the best in the league, probably top 3.

Regardless of whether Monahan is better than Toews or Kopitar right now, he still has a lot work to do to leave a legacy in Calgary like the one Toews will leave in Chicago and the one Kopitar will leave in LA.
If we've already witnessed peak Monahan and all we have to show for it is a 2nd round run in '15 and a 1st round sweep in '17, I feel pretty embarrassed as a Flames fan. For that reason alone Monahan is not better than Kopitar and Toews in their prime.

A team that makes the finals is by definition a Stanley Cup contender. That's the point. Get into the finals and you can win.

Your second line centre will get 13-15 minutes a night at most, because Backlund, your "elite shutdown centre" will have to play more minutes than your second line centre. So your second line centre might get 30-35 points. Backlund, because he is a counterpuncher, and will get ice time, will score more.

Top line is one of the best offensively. The 3M has been pubically recognized in the past as one of the top lines in hockey (up there with the Bergeron line) even thought they're a second line, and are looking better than ever this year. The Flames are stacked in the top 6. Bottom six is still a work in progress but has a lot of potential. The team is looking pretty competitive to me.

Tkachuk can score. Backlund can carry the puck and pass it well. Frolik has scored 5 goals on that second line (I'm not counting the ENGs), and he's a guy that basically shoots the puck on net and hopes it goes in. Put Neal on there in place of Frolik and I think they can score even more. Neal hasn't really had a great shot with that line yet.
That's two scoring lines, one of which plays great D.

This works for me but then the flames are back to what really hurt us last year, weak bottom 6.
If we truly want to go deep I think they need to leave neal down on the third line to have some semblance of balance.

Nah, you need your scoring on the lines that have the minutes. I mean, if you have Malkin and Crosby, maybe you can get away with putting Kessel on a third line.
The point about Neal is that he is a shooter. He needs a competent passer to be effective. On this team, that's top six personnel.

I would agree with keeping Neal on the 3rd line if we could find a legitimate offensive threat to round out the top 9.
Right now I only really like 8 guys on the top 3 lines.
I think Dube can get there but I'm fine being patient with him, as he isn't there yet.
Czarnik, Ryan and Jankowski need to show more for me to like the fit.
Until we can find some chemistry on the 3rd line may as well throw Neal with Backs and Chucky unless we are playing a team with a high end first line that needs shutting down.

A contending team is one that is capable of winning the Cup over a period of years, not a team with a great run IMO. Let's see where Vegas finishes the next couple of years before modelling a team after them.
Although re-creating the 04 Flames would be a blast.

You’ve basically said there are few, if any contending clubs.
The 04 Flames are the very definition of last years Vegas.
I believe that a contending club is one that is capable of winning the SC if on a run. In a cap world, that’s about as good as it gets.

Still only about Bobrovsky. And that is at least as far off as the deadline if at all.
