With some notable losses in their lineup the Mavericks announced earlier today that they added 3 forwards to their roster. John Schiavo, Nick Miglio, and Danny Smith all from the SPHL. Schiavo played with the Mavericks in the 2015-16 season. He had 14 goals and 17 assists going in his SPHL season prior to his departure. Miglio comes with 7 points in 14 games. Smith is an Edmonton native that joins the team with 20 points in 25 games so far this season.

I should get a better scouting report when I see them play this weekend for the Mavericks' triple header home stand.

Kansas City starts their 3 game weekend at home against Toledo Walleye. They got a little extra attention tonight as it was a televised game.

Mason McDonald gets the start. The first goal comes from Toledo just over 5 minutes into the game. A wrister from the slot beats McDonald and he didn't know where the puck was until he heard it hit metal. The first plays very quick with just one whistle through the first. A lot of back and forth hockey, mostly favoured towards the Walleye. After a TV timeout about 12 minutes in, Toledo gets their second. Again, in a play that McDonald does not seem to get a good read on. Tyler Elbrecht responds almost immediately to this by challenging a Walleye player to a fight he had all the control of. At the next puck drop, Troy Donnay gets into a fight of his own and his opponent pulls him down to the ice and just rails on him. Both guys in the box had a lot to say to their opponents on the other side. Donnay's fight was a dirty, unsportsmanlike move from the Walleye d-man. The Mavs get a powerplay 3/4 into the period and give up a short handed breakaway that McDonald doesn't really have to make a save on as it rolls off the end of his stick. A late penalty from Mark Cooper puts the Mavs short handed to start the 2nd. Shots end 8-4 for Toledo and the score sticks at 2-0. It was pointed out by a former insider that both goals in the first were produced by defence.

The first intermission wasn't even finished yet and Elbrecht finds yet another fighting partner. My guess is the conversations on the ice aren't very jolly tonight. The second period was more Mavericks than Walleye. Eric Freschi had a few quality opportunities in the slot but was unable to capitalize off of them. The Walleye goalie has not been leaving a lot of room for the Mavs. They need to figure out more creative ways to put the puck past him. They do end the period still trailing 2-0 but even up the shot clock a bit more. Shawn Pauly takes a late holding call in the 2nd and they start another period with a penalty. This time its 1:47 into the third.

The third looks familiar to the first with a lot of zone time for Toledo and not a lot of opportunities for the Mavericks. Any close chances the Mavericks could get would result in the same disappointing results. 11 minutes in, the Mavericks get a powerplay and with 24 seconds left in that one, the Walleye find themselves down another man. They get a 5 on 3 to work with. They call a timeout and play out both penalties with no production. McDonald was making some quality kick saves towards the end of the game that held it at 2. He is pulled from the net with 2 mins to go for one last stand for the Mavericks. They lose control of the zone and end up scrambling to protect their own. Toledo scores an empty netter to basically seal this game.

Final Score 3-0 Walleye. Shots end 24-20 Mavericks. They get another shot at them tomorrow night.

Tonight's sellout is game 2/3 against Toledo that puts Rangers prospect, Chris Nell between the pipes. It was expected that he would be in tonight to give McDonald a night off before he likely gets the start again tomorrow. Danny Smith (only Smith in the lineup at the moment) gets on the board first for the Mavs. This is only his second game with the team. It comes from beautiful set up by Eric Freschi. Freschi is finally given a point for his efforts in the last two nights. Definitely good to see. KC takes a hooking penalty 12 minutes in and their biggest difference maker in the penalty kill was between the pipes. Chris Nell makes a point blank pad save and a tricky glove save that gets the crowd going wild. Newbie, Nick Miglio draws a roughing penalty but Mark Cooper gets sent to the box 20 seconds into their power play, taking away that chance almost immediately. The rest of the period plays out with the same intensity that it started with and the Mavericks hold their 1-0 lead through 20 minutes.

Toledo ties the game 4:33 into the second when Nell is screened by his own players and the puck flips off the top of his glove. Not the type of goal that represents the night he had been having. They get a power play opportunity and keep a lot of zone pressure yet are unable to register a single shot. Eric Freschi is just centimetres from making it a 2-1 game where he gets a one timer set up and just barely nicks it off the post. From my angle it looked like it was in. Not quite though. No score change through the rest of the 2nd but Kayle Doetzel took a seat for high sticking and his penalty will carry over to the third. Mavericks are outshot through two 19-14.

The Mavericks kill off the rest of the Doetzel penalty in the start of the third and are in pretty good control of the rushes for a good stretch. The game stays even however. Shawn Pauly takes a holding penalty 9 minutes into the third. The Mavericks put up a great penalty kill and keep the score even. With 6:06 to go in the game, Patch Alber rips a shot from the point that finds the back of the net. Eric Freschi gets another assist on the night with the set up on this goal as well. Toledo clears their net with 90 seconds to go in the game and calls a timeout with 1:06 to go. Shawn Pauly takes advantage of this and scores and empty netter with 32 seconds to go. Eric Freschi gets the assist on this one too. He ends the night with 3 points with assists on every goal. This secures the game similarly to last night and they win it 3-1. Great beginning and end to this game. Tomorrow should be interesting between these two teams.

After an outstanding performance by Chris Nell last night, he gets the nod again for today's afternoon competition. The first plays out quite slow and 14:25 in, Toledo finds the back of the net after a bad turnover by Tyler Elbrect and the rest of the team scrambling to try and get it out. Shortly after, Eric Freschi takes a slashing call. But the Mavericks contain Toledo long enough for a successful penalty kill. The rest of the period plays out in the same type of shot for shot way it had been going in the first place. Shots end 9-8 favouring Toledo.

Mark Cooper ties the game 5:31 into the 2nd where Greg Betzold set him up and he flips it in mid fall. Patch Alber heads to the box for a bleak tripping call and the Mavericks are able to just barely kill it off. They get a power play opportunity of their own when Miglio gets a stick under his visor. In their pp, an obvious high sticking call goes unnoticed and the players let the officials know. It was quite obvious that Toledo was bringing out more of an aggressive type of game around this time. Greg Betzold pulls the Mavericks ahead with some great positioning off of Bryce Aneloski's shot and deflects it in at 15:54. After this goal, the team buzzes for another one. A lot of zone pressure as they pepper the Walleye goalie with shots. Shots finish up 21-18 at the end of 2.

Bryce Aneloski makes it known that the Mavericks are still in control of this game and scores just 36 seconds into the period. Ripping a shot from the blue line. Jared VanWormer registers an assist on that one. Both those guys were just ticking time bombs during this game waiting for their shot to find the back of the net. Toledo does not have a lot left to throw at them and is looking a little dead in the water. Toledo finds life when they squeeze the puck past nell with 4:01 to go in the game. They call a timeout with 1:42 to go and it does not pay off when they pull the goalie and Jared VanWormer breaks loose and throws the puck at the empty net.

Final Score 4-2. Shots end 26-22 for the Mavs

Doesn't bode well for Mason McDonald to lose the starters net in the ECHL.

Agreed... I wasn't really expecting Chris Nell in net tonight but it makes sense after last night. Toledo tops their division and prior to this weekend they had not beat them at all. Not a good sign when they are straying away from McDonald for big games.

Kid is fading hard now. Must be mentally tough to watch a younger better goalie blow past you on the depth chart while you toil down in the ECHL.

Tough to stomach the fact that the Flames scouts picked this kid over Demko, and even worse that Demko went to a bitter rival and is a top AHL goalie who is looking like the real deal.

Tyler Parsons is back in Kansas City. Stockton called up Mason McDonald. Good for Parsons so he can get more games in.

The Kansas City Mavericks face the Rapid City Rush for the first of a double header this weekend. Tyler Parsons is back and not to be confused with Mason McDonald as he will take over his #31 on his sweater for now. Chris Nell holds his #1 jersey.

John Schiavo gets his first goal of the season just 1:50 into the first period. He chips the puck over the left pad of the Rapid City goalie. Unfortunately, just 50 seconds later Tyler Parsons is caught sleeping and the Rush sneak one past him before he had time to put a pad down to stop it. The Mavs take the first power play of the game and it goes as quick as it comes. Not a whole lot done in the two minutes of a man advantage.

Rapid City pulls ahead at 9:25 when a shot is deflected over the blocker side of Parsons. He signals to the ref that he believes there should have been a high sticking call but the goal stands with little challenge. Greg Betzold takes a cross-checking penalty after blocking a shot and charging the shooter. No damage is done on this pk and it is actually cut short due to another slashing call against the Rush. Betzold heads right back to the box for trying to stop a short handed breakaway. Alternate Captain, Bryce Aneloski slams his stick against the boards in frustration. Mavs don't get a chance to set up a golden power play opportunity. Shots end even at 10 with the Rush leading 2-1.

6:24 into the 2nd, Rapid City makes this a 3-1 game with another goal from Pavel Jenys. He gets the credit for the 1st and 3rd goal at this point. 3 goals on 16 shots. Later, Tyler Parsons tries to break up a breakaway and ends up colliding with Mark Cooper of his own team. He does not seem too shaken up by it but goes quite a time without being able to grab his stick that flew to the corner. He stops some quality scoring chances to hold the rest of the period. The Mavs still stay aggressive in their offensive zone with multiple shots sliding through the crease just barely wide.

After a Mark Cooper tripping penalty in the third, the Rush are able to put another unanswered goal on the board on the power play. Rapid City finds and gets goal #5 after a shot Parsons thinks to have secured in his glove flips out and lands in. Tough beat for the #31. The toughest shots are what he's making the big saves on and some fluky goals just barely trickle past. Mark Cooper picks his goalie up and scores with just over 5 mins to go. Parsons was looking a little down on himself and needed that for a little pick me up. Shawn Pauly almost gets goal 3 for the Mavs but he deflects it with a high stick and it is waved off almost immediately. This was with 2 minutes to go.

And that is how the game stays. Final score Rapid City 5 Mavericks 2. Shots end at 36-29 for the Mavericks.

Tyler Parsons gets another shot at the Rapid City rush after last night's loss. First period plays pretty uneventfully. A couple penalties here and there but in the last minute the Rush send two to the box and give the Mavs a 5 on 3 for the last 20 seconds of the first then 19 seconds into the 2nd.

Mavericks blow their power plays. With 2 seconds to go in the second one, Rapid City capitalizes on a turnover at centre ice. The breakaway shot goes five hole on Parsons. Eric Freschi answers back later in the 2nd with a perfectly placed wrist shot. Another scoring chance for the Mavericks does not go as planned as Bryce Aneloski rips a slap shot that catches his own teammate Nick Miglio up high. Hard to tell if he was bleeding from the nose or mouth but he left immediately and did not return. Later confirmed as hitting him in the cheek bone. Shots finish 20-18 for the Mavericks after 2.

The third plays a little slow. Each team takes their turn at a rush and is shut down. Parsons holds his ground and comes up with some great saves. He's looking a lot more comfortable tonight than last night. Pretty easy when the score is not so heavily weighed against you and dumb goals aren't happening. Mavs get a late power play chance with just over 3 and a half minutes to go in the third. Jared VanWormer comes in clutch for a late goal with 1:46 to go in the game. That brings it home for the Mavericks and they beat the Ruch 2-1. Parsons stops 34/35 shots

KC meets the Colorado Eagles tonight at home. Tyler Parsons gets the 3rd consecutive start. Mark Cooper gets the Mavericks on the board 5:50 into the game off a sharp angle shot that flips over the goalies left pad. There was a lot zone pressure for both sides in the first and some good defensive efforts by the Mavericks keep the Eagles scoreless. Guys were jumping in the crease and it seemed every rebound would get cleared out before an Eagles player could even think of touching it. Good to see the defence step it up tonight.

2nd period looks similar to the first. Each team getting their shot at each other. The Eagles split off on the penalty kill and earn a breakaway that beats Parsons and evens the score. The Mavericks keep the pep in their step after this and get some more scoring chances that do not go their way. A lot of bounces are working in their favour tonight but no more are finding the back of the net. Mike McMurtry and Darren Nowick have been playing excellent tonight and really show how their talents were missed when they were in Stockton. McMurtry has been all over the net and leading most of the rushes. Darren Nowick broke up an Eagles rush when he picked the pocket of an unsuspecting Eagles forward.

Danny Smith earns a lead for the Mavericks and slides one past the Eagles net minder. He shows his frustration by breaking his stick over the crossbar. Mavericks hold onto this lead and the Eagles are unable to do a whole lot to even it up. They take a bad penalty in the last 2 mins and spend the time they needed to catch up, being short handed. They pull their goalie with a minute to go and as a result, Darren Nowick scores an empty netter with 10 seconds to go.

Tyler Parsons record as a Maverick goes up to 11-9 after this win and with Mason McDonald already sitting in the press box tonight, he is expected to be recalled to Stockton tomorrow.

Didn't make it to last night's game but the Mavericks fell 5-1 against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Chris Nell was in net. Mason McDonald gets a shot at them tonight.

The Mavericks come out energetic in their 2nd half of their 2 game matchup against the Cincinnati Cyclones. They almost came out a little desperate in the first bit. They knew what they needed to do but they were not playing relaxed enough to execute. Some weak turnovers, a bad bounce off a puck played by McDonald and some missed hits along the boards. Both teams get a power play opportunity and the Cyclones use theirs to score a power play goal by ripping a shot over McDonald's right shoulder with 6 seconds to go in their man advantage. The Mavericks take another penalty shortly after and they kill it. Period ends 1-0 and shots end pretty tight at 11-10 for the Cyclones.

2nd period starts with a Cyclones goal just 50 seconds in. Unfortunately for the Mavs goal number 3 comes just 6 minutes later. Not as energetic coming out of the gate this period for the Mavs. They need something to change to avoid getting walked all over. Greg Betzold gets tangled up with a Cyclone in the offensive zone and stands up and drops the gloves. He doesn't overpower the fight but looks to draw some energy for his teammates to work off. A Cyclone takes a holding penalty shortly after the fight and the Mavs get the energy they needed and score a power play goal. Given to Shawn Pauly but it looked like Mark Cooper got a piece of the rebound off his skate. Mason McDonald's mask goes flying near the end of the period when a Cyclone player got his stick under the bottom of it and flipped it up and off. Looked like a high stick but no call was made. The score holds through the rest of the period and ends 3-1 for the Cyclones that outshoot the Mavs 28-19 after 40.

The Cyclones get their fourth goal just over 2 minutes into the 3rd. McDonald is beat on the one timer. The Mavericks go to their sloppy play reminiscent of the first. Not a whole lot happens for them in this frame. Shawn Pauly gets slammed into the ice when he is put into an arm lock in the corner. Both players get roughing calls and take a seat for 2/2:21 to go in the game. The game gets especially ugly in the last few minutes. No structure and no fight from the obviously out of it Mavs. Some pushing and shoving and frustration being shown but they let it die along with the game. Final score 4-1. Shots end 38-28 Cyclones. They will see them again on the road on Thursday night.

Mavericks fall to the Cincinnati Cyclones for the third game in a row. They led 2-1 at the end of the first and halfway through the second some ugly penalties caused a string of goals they could not come back from. Tyler Parsons was in net tonight and was very solid through two and did his best to hold on in the third. Nell, McDonald and Parsons all got their shot at Cincinnati and none could pull off a victory. The Mavs look to snap their losing streak on the road this weekend. Final score was 5-2

Mavericks played the Toledo Walleye the last two nights. Last night they fell 2-1 in a very close game with a great performance by Mason McDonald.

The team announced today that backup goaltender Chris Nell was sent back to the Hartford Wolf Pack. They signed Kent Nusbaum who ended up getting his first professional hockey game appearance tonight in their 5-0 loss.

Mason McDonald got into another goalie fight tonight after a line brawl erupted after the 4th goal. He and the other goalie left the game with misconducts. After the 5th goal another line brawl broke out. Mavericks were the better team through the first period and started the second with just a one goal deficit. It was a very sloppy night for them overall but the biggest killer for them right now is their penalty killing. Toledo went 2/3 on the power play tonight and Kansas City is second last in the league in the PK category with a 78%.

Nick Miglio was a player that stuck out to me earlier in the game before it all hit the fan. He was a part of many scoring opportunities and kept finding himself with the puck. He seems to be a decent addition to the Mavericks to fill some holes.

Mavs will come back home to play 3 games this weekend.
