Also tried one of these recently and I was shocked how closely it resembled actual beef... really close in all aspects.
Way above the usual 'veggie' patties served most places.

Had a double double animal style burger at a San Diego InNOut a few days ago. I always felt as though InNOut was wildly over rated, but I decided to give it a shot again because of the almost cult like status in Western Canada. The verdict: its OK, but still wildly over rated. Shake Shack is still significantly better in the US. In fact I could name about a dozen spots in Calgary that are better. It is surprisingly cheap though.

We reviewed their regular burger but they actually also offer a special burger every wed. For instance this week it was a mushroom Swiss. Almost always amazing. It may be my favourite burger spot in the city

I had no idea they even served burgers. I thought it was pretty much hot dogs and tacos.

Best burger in town is the Smash Burger feature at Empire provisions. They only do it once and a while not every day.
Just ate shake shack last week and then the one at Empire today. I would say Empire version is as close as you’ll get to shake shack. Some may even prefer it more!

How do you know which days they are serving it? That is way across town for me and if I knew they served it on Tuesdays or whatever that would be helpful.

Oh McDonalds Canada, you have managed to offend an entire continent with your half ass attempt at an "Aussie" burger.

What the hell are beetroot chips? It is not an Aussie burger unless you end up covered in beetroot juice after eating.

Beets. They are just beets. Why this “beetroot” nonsense. Does it make it sound more rustic and earthy?

Aussies are weird that's why.
Same reason peppers are capsicums.

Haha I saw an ad for that on youtube while using a canadian ip address and that was my first thought as well! Obviously the corporates felt that canadians weren't going to embrace the canned beetroot slices so they put chips on instead.
Anyone tried one? How was it?

This just in, different countries in faraway places use different names for some things. More at 11.
On my first day of work in a kitchen in New Zealand, the head chef told me to go to the walk in and get some celery, carrots and capsicums. Got all the way there before I realised I had no idea what a capsicum was.

So....just recently tried my hand at making home made hamburgers.
OMG have I been missing out. Had no idea they were so easy to make and turn out so well. Just starting with a good ground beef and form into patties with a press. Trying not to work them too much.
On the BBQ at 450-500 with only salt & pepper, 3 mins per side. Amazeballs. But wondering if it's better to have the lid open or closed? I think I'd like them a bit less done in the middle.

Congratualtions on your discovery
Lid open would definitely leave the middle less well done.
I'd be curious for someone to chime in - I'm happy to put blind faith in a restaurant and order my burgers medium when given the option, but hesitate to do it at home... I've often read that the meat needs to be freshly ground to safely cook less than well-done - true story? Or can I safely cook my burgers to medium when using pre-packaged ground meat from the grocery store?

I have cooked burgers to medium before with packaged ground beef before without issue. I use beef from Coop. Usually I will grind my own beef though. It seems as though well done is strongly recommended though even with fresh ground beef because our beef is not irradiated like US beef is.
