Can someone explain to me why Thiem decided it was a good idea to play a warm up tournament this week? He's spent about 7 hrs on court the last 3 days, he's going to have nothing left next week.

Venus has dropped the first set against Wang Qiang.
She's like the Chinese Bouchard. Pretty but struggling. Would be a huge win.

Nick Kyrgios withdraws against fellow Aussie Bernard Tomic citing an elbow injury. The interesting thing is that he was healthy enough to win the doubles title this past weekend in Lyon alongside Jack Sock.

I think there is a new rule if you withdrawal before round one you split the prize money but if you withdrawal during the first round you get less, or something like that. Del Potro may also pull out still, as he's still not 100%

My question is whether you still get the 90 points or whatever it is just for being in the draw. Still, pretty funny that that matchup already produced a walkover.

1 Aussie dbag out! another Aussie dbag go. Tomic will probably give up now that he has made more than $1000. He will be content counting his money in his hotel room.
Well at least Tomic has a career for when the ATP forces him out. He can be Serena Williams' ball boy at her tennis academy.

Ostapenko, the defending champ, is in trouble. 13 double faults!
Marty McFly is down too. Looks like he has no energy.

Stan Wawrinka was upset today in the first round of the French. Because of his loss he has tumbled to 256 in the world. Given his age and the fact he is coming back from injury I don't know if we have seen the last of the great Stanimal.

Denis up to 23. I believe if he makes it to Nadal he could get into the top 20 (though it seems unlikely that it would be for long).

It will be a tough road back for Stan, but he strikes me as a guy who's willing to give his all to try to make it back. Also, Stan likes using emojis (this tweet from a few days ago).

Also of note, Jaume Munar (he was the guy who eliminated Felix in French Open qualifying) took out David Ferrer today in five sets (and that's after losing the first two sets to Ferrer). Set scores were 3-6 3-6 7-6(3) 7-6(4) 7-5

Marco Trungelliti takes full advantage of Kyrgios withdrawing and dispatches Bernard Tomic in four sets.
Edit: It should be noted that Trungelliti made a 9 hour car journey back to Paris in order to play the match (he was already entered into another tourney and travelled back to Paris upon hearing that he was a lucky loser).

Relatively speaking, Rafa is "struggling" today. Been down a break in both the second and third sets. Still probably gonna win in straights, but perhaps he's more playable this year than last.

He looks like he's having 0 fun out there today. Hopefully after the rain delay he can come back re-focused and end this in 3 sets because he has not looked good at all today.
