This is actually fun to see the Rangers start a real rebuild. They could be good really soon if they keep acquiring draft picks and good players. Huge advantage with everyone wanting to play there.
Unlike Calgary, Edmonton etc, the Rangers only have to build 80% of contender the other 20% will gladly sign there to shore up the build.
Rangers will make the playoffs next year.
Any team with Hank has a chance plus I really like their additions so far.
I feel like this trade can’t be fully judged until we see what the contracts look like for Pionk and Trouba. I’ve always been underwhelmed by Trouba, but his numbers mean he will get a huge deal. If the Jets get Pionk on a 3 or 4 year value contract it could level this deal out.
But this decision is about more than hockey for Trouba.
It’s personal.
“It’s a great opportunity for myself and my fiancée,” said Trouba, whose fiancée is about to start her residency in her quest to become a doctor. “Her career is as important as my career. We both are passionate about different things and our goal from a couple of years back was we wanted to make this work. And we decided we wanted to make this work. This is part of it, to be realistic with you.
“From a life standpoint, that’s what I decided in the end. I’m going to marry the girl and I want her to be happy and for her dreams to be fulfilled. She’s worked extremely hard to get where she is with schooling and the time she’s put in. I want her to see her be successful just as much as I want to be successful.”
So it’s not that Trouba has an issue with the Jets or Winnipeg in general, but playing in the United States makes his life easier on a number of fronts.

So, I think NYR wins this trade too. But when you take into account the context - the fact that Trouba wanted out, and Winnipeg wants to be able to draft in the first round this year - I think people are overselling the one-sidedness of this. If there was a trade that Chevy should regret, it's the Hayes trade, not this one. I think the problem is that people are underrating Pionk. This is one of my favourite goals of the year.
Here's another beaut.
Pionk can skate, he has really good vision, and he has a heck of a slapshot. He's the type of player you hope you end up with around the 15-20 overall mark. More importantly, though, he's ready. This is sort of like getting two mid firsts for Trouba, except that Pionk has greater value than a mid first because you don't have to wait for him to develop. The tradeoff is that you don't get him cheap during the ELC period. Winnipeg will take that tradeoff all day, especially since he's probably not going to make a huge amount on this contract.
So, yeah, Trouba's worth more, but I still don't mind this considering the situation the Jets were in.

To call Pionk a gongshow defensively would be polite. He's got to put up 40-45 points just to offset that. This is a guy who could easily flame out as well as break out, the ice time on the much better Jets team isn't going to come as easily.
For their sake you hope he's ready, far from a guarantee from a soon to 24 year old blueliner however.

They got worse after the two deals...it's a foul ball at best. Lemieux isn't a bad player either
When the situation ends with you receiving a cheap, effective NHL player and a 1st round pick for a guy who's made numerous public attempts to not be in Winnipeg, it can't be that large a misfire.

Exactly, it's 2 separate trades, they didn't trade Trouba for Hayes. The deadline deal is water under the bridge at this point.

well I disagree...Jets are worse next season and they are in a window
This kind of reminds me of when the Flames acquired Chris Butler as part of the package for Robyn Regehr. Butler had 21 points in 59 games as a 22 year old (a year before being traded). Pionk just had 26 points in 73 games.
Just because a player is young and gets playing time, doesn't mean they're actually good.
I don't know much about Pionk, but I assume he's better than Butler was.
The Trouba situation was always kind of messy, so I'm not surprised that the Jets failed to maximize his value. At least they did get something pretty decent out of it. The first round pick is nice.
It seems like the Jets might be worse next season, unless their goaltending rebounds.
