Quote:
The New York Islanders announced today that forward Brock Nelson has agreed to terms on a six-year contract.

Nelson, 27, had a career year this past season with 53 points (25 goals and 28 assists) and also posted a single season best, +20 rating. This was the second straight season, and third time in his six-year pro career, that Nelson has played in all 82 regular season games. A native of Warroad, MN, Nelson has 241 career points (124 goals, 117 assists) in 480 National Hockey League games, all with the Islanders. The team selected Nelson in the first round (30th overall) at the 2010 NHL Draft.

A tad rich IMO. I would have thought he is worth 5.5M. Length of contract is fair for a 27 year old.

Really good defensively though and on that team with that coach...exactly what they need for their system.

Pretty consistent 20 goal scorer. Huge jump in ice time this year with Tavares gone, and he now plays Backlund minutes. With a little more production although his corsi numbers are below 50%.

I guess that's worth $6 million for a center.

Seems a bit much. But they so have a lot of cap space to play with, although a lot of guys to sign still

Seems a bit high but I like that they locked him up for a decent term. Just nice to see the isles able to re-sign one of their players.

Don’t see Hayes taking much less

What other decent centers are even available? Seems like a thin market if Brassard is one of your best bets

This....is a mistake. Middle of the roster physical forward who can score some, but isn't overly gifted. He's 27 and this takes him to 33. Watch his decline once he hits 30. Seems to be happening to all of the bigger physical forwards these days. They just can't keep up with the skating at a certain point.

He owes a million or so to Trotz. Great system.

Does this change anything for Lee and Eberle? I wouldn't be surprised if one of them moves on.

I would guess Eberle.

Islanders can’t let their captain leave two years in a row? I would hope anyways

Signed at 7.23% of the cap.

Backlund when he signed was for 7.13% of the cap.

Same term, but backlund 2 years older at the time of the signing.

I think I would take Nelson at 6 vs Backlund at 5.35

It's an over-payment and possibly in four years looks really bad but the Islanders can't afford to lose all their top players to free agency. Most GM's are looking no further than what these players can do in the next 2-3 years and accepting the long term risk.

You didn't limit your comment to non-generational talents.

Your comment related to signing 27 year old physical forwards, and having them regress once they hit 30. Some do, but many do not.

That's a good point, everyone forgets that $6M isn't what $6M was some years back.

IIRC, Iggy's first contract under a cap world would be worth close to $15M now.

I would much rather have Backlund on his current contract.
