Really? I love me some Dominion. With all the expansion packs it's even better. The huge variety of cards ensure no two games are ever the same.

Boardgamegeek.com is probably a good place to start looking.

Other gateway games that I've had success with newer, not so intense players would be Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride.

Alhambra is another easier game that plays pretty quick that people enjoy.

Not at all, except that they both use cards. Very different gameplay between the two.

Trivial Pursuit.
I can't play Monopoly because I get too intense and competitive. Monopoly brings out the worst in me.

The best game is Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot. A great card game that never takes itself too seriously, but requires some strategy.

Board Game Hipster, has to be an oxymoron.

Probably I am burned-out on it, playing it hundreds of times already.

I find it lacking. I don't mind the dice-rolling, but some people really don't like any randomness in games. I find the decisions are obvious - after you have played it a lot, it is usually clear what you should do on your set-up, and on your turns. The game is prone to king-making, and too often friends or couples work together, unbalancing the game. Some people get really upset if you put the robber on them.

The game is good at building tension, as you all race to get 10 points. The replayability comes from the random set-up of the board (the great innovation of this game).

Settlers of the Stone Age is the best of the series - much more strategic depth.

Settlers of Catan is an excellent game and I noticed it was on sale at Walmart for 32$ recently.

do I get a special title or anything for a 5 year old thread bump that's been on the front page since? Nerd of the Year or something?? haha.

Today I picked up the Game of Thrones card game to try at work, though it looks quite daunting after a quick glance at the rules, and I also grabbed a copy of Carcassonne for home.

Played Carcassone tonight with my wife and mother in law and it delivered. Fun game that took maybe five minutes to learn.

We used to have a lot of fun playing Mille Bornes...a French card game that simulates a road trip where you try travel set # of miles while giving each other flat tires, out of gas, speed limits, etc.

Well I like all the contemporary strategy games mentioned thus far, I think the following classic board games deserve mention:

Chess
Go
Backgammon

Axis and Allies, Risk and Settlers are always good. My buddies and will also play Samurai Swords, Risk Godstorm, Twilight Imperium and Zombies!!! Samurai Swords and Risk Godstorm are a nice change up from your standard risk. Twilight Imperium is kind of a mix between Risk and Settlers. If you haven't played Zombies!!! I strongly encourage it. It's tons of fun and if you get a big enough group together you can play the Humans!!! expansion with it.
