Default Middle Earth coming to Amazon TV

Quote:
There have been rumors that Amazon is working on a Lord of the Rings TV series in its quest to find the next Game of Thrones, and now there's confirmation. Amazon announced today that it has acquired the global TV rights to The Lord of the Rings. Amazon Studios will produce a multiseason television series in cooperation with New Line Cinema, the Tolkien estate and HarperCollins.

It's important to note that this series "will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring," rather than re-tell the stories depicted onscreen in Peter Jackson's trilogy. The deal, which commits to multiple seasons for the show, also includes a possible spin-off series. Given the popularity of Lord of the Rings as a franchise (we'll just pretend that the endless The Hobbit movies don't exist), the rumors of Amazon prepping a free ad-supported video service couldn't come at a better time.

Could be interesting.

They could just do stuff out of the Silmarillion. That has broad strokes but no fine details, which gives TV people a lot of leeway to do as they please. Anyway, I'm going to keep my expectations low.

Hell, if they're going to go to the Silmarillion they could just stuff up.

Theres two kinds of people in this world:

- People who claim to have read The Silmarillion.

- Filthy rotten liars.

I could never read The Silmarillion, it was like reading the Bible. However some of the insane Tolkien fans over at the SomethingAwful forums appears to have read it and go crazy in depth with stuff from it. I should check that thread out, they are probably losing it with all the possibilities this announcement may make possible.

As the resident Tolkien nerd, I am cautiously optimistic.

I'm not sure how they could bring the first few stories of the Silmarillion to screen, and I'm not sure I want them to. It's so... abstract. I'm afraid they'll ruin what I've built up in my own mind.

There is plenty of other stuff in Silmarillion (and other books) that you can make multiple seasons of TV, and multiple spin off shows/movies and that's what gets me going.

I feel like they should hire me to do the casting. I would kick ass at casting.

John C Reilly for Tom Bombadil

Quiet you! Everyone knows that Tom Bombadil needs to be Jack Black. The world needs it.

I've read it thrice! Well, the first time I gave up, so we'll call it twice. It's got an origin story that is much better then the one in that other famous book, which would be cool to see on tv.

This might be a good series to do similar to Fargo or True Detective, where each season is one story arc.

Sorry. What I meant was the stuff with Tom Bombadil definitely wasn't annoying and was definitely important in advancing the story.

I've heard the Tolkien estate have been pretty adamant about not selling the rights to the Silmarillion so I doubt if that will be covered.

I want this to be good because good entertainment is good for everyone. My expectations are pretty low though. This would have to be the biggest budget project of Amazon yet.

They should get Colbert on to executive produce it.

I just read the "multiple seasons" are to take place between the time of the Hobbit and LOTR.

Not sure there's enough material there for THAT to happen.

Expectations lowered.

The should start with the appendices of LOTR, there is enough material there to go with multiple storylines.

Try audiobook, read by Martin Shaw.

Helps you get trough the trenches of some of the heavier material.
