Strange trade from the Flyers point of view.

So caps get just as good of defenceman and save $4 million in cap space? Call this a win for caps

The Flyers obviously feel that Niskanen provides an upgrade.

What this shows is that the Flyers want to contend now, so they will likely be involved in some traded.

With Kevin Hayes likely signing, Nolan Patrick is perhaps available for the right price, whatever that may be. But it won't be for "bits and pieces". I expect he'll be part of a larger trade, where the Flyers will give up Patrick plus another good piece for a good forward upgrade.

This seems like a lot of assumptions based off of them acquiring Niskanen

Seems like a really dumb move for the Flyers to give up on Patrick. I doubt he gets traded.

I feel like this trade doesn't make any sense.

Flyers and caps are divisional rivals so Philly decides to do a solid to a cap crunch team a season removed from the cup.

All for Niskanen?

Am I missing some glaring detail in their respective contracts or something?

I agree Flash. On the surface, this seems a little lop-sided for Washington. It isn't so much the difference in salary but the fact that Philadelphia is also eating 30% of Gudas' salary.

Maybe Niskanen is up for the Norris?

So Philly trades for a better offensive defenseman with plenty of playoff experience and a Stanley Cup to his name. Tells me they think they have a good team and wants to make some noise in the playoffs if they sneak in.

This is bizarre to me. Both are quite bad defencemen, but Gudas does bring that greasy, dirty, POS aggression to his game.

I totally get why Washington does this.

I am completely puzzled as to why Philly did not get any other compensation for retaining salary.

Could it be as simple as Philly has been trying to acquire a right handed D for months with no one biting? Desperation?

Yeah... I am like... I would rather have Gudas. Flyers have plenty of skill dmen already. They could use a guy like Gudas. Maybe Niskanen's leadership is off the charts or some such.

Yeah Philly taking on the extra year, the bigger contract, and retaining salary makes no sense to me either.

I don't think the extra year for Niskanen decreases his value. It's only 2 years, not 5 and Niskanen is still a solid top 4 D.

I would say Niskanen is the better defenseman, but not by much. I think this was a case where philly targeted a guy and gave up a little more than "market value" to get the deal done.

Also rumours of them trading Ghost. Makes sense with the acquisition of Niskanen as they can play similar roles.

I don't think Gudas is that good. Clearly in the minority on this board, but IMO that's an upgrade for Philly on D.

Ya Niskanen is a legit top4 guy while Gudas is a bottom pairing goon, I can see this from both team's POV. Salary cap relief for WSH, upgrade for PHI.
