Tomas Plekanec said Friday he will retire from the National Hockey League after agreeing to have his contract terminated by the Montreal Canadiens.
Quote:
Plekanec has played 984 of his 1,001 career NHL games with the Canadiens. The Kladno, Czech Republic native put up 608 career points (233 goals and 375 assists) along with 53 points in 94 playoff games.
Nah, mutual contract terminations happen all the time.

The player doesn't usually retire immediately after, though, while being over the age of 35.
Pretty sure Plekanec is just going overseas to play in the Czech Republic. He's "retiring" in name only, just from the NHL.
