According to Cap Friendly, he is.
I like this deal for both sides. Avoids the bad blood of arbitration, and gives Mangi 2 years to develop, and then (hopefully) justify a big salary jump.
I'd love to offload Ryan, and reallocate that money into the UFA/RFA market, but I just don't see a deal, even for a 3rd or 4th round pick.
A couple more years of cap jail for the Flames, then Gio is gone, the buyouts are finished, and the Looch deal will be in the home stretch. Of course, then you have to re-up Chucky, Johnny (I think he will still be here) and others. I guess the cycle never ends...

When Mangiapane played his first ten games in Calgary I honestly thought he would never become a NHL player. It just goes to show that one shouldn't count young players out too early. I really like this deal for both sides.

We don't NEED to always carry 7 D and 13F though.
I got:
800+k available still

We will need that as the bare minimum.
You want at least 1 spare F & D.
It would be extremely risky to only have one scratched player.

Who cares really. They didn't buy into your and Wilson's belief, instead did the right thing. Not the wrong thing. Just like last year, tree wasn't going to budge on the QO for him. This year, no massive buy in.
If he becomes a top 6 like you and Wilson believe, theyll figure it out.

I'm very happy the Flames were able to lock up a great young forward at such a good price. I predict he'll provide great value over the next two years.
I wish they could've signed him long term, but this definitely helps the salary cap situation right now.

Great deal.
I 100% would've preferred an Andersson-type extension but the Flames simply didn't have the space.
Keeps him RFA but risks the chance of him going to arbitration and walking to UFA.
There is zero doubt in my mind that Mangiapane will completely outplay the contract

I would have preferred a 6 year deal with a bit higher AAV, however the Flames are right up against the cap and likely couldn't make that work.

Andrew Mangiapane is already a top-six forward.

This is a good point, especially this year as our farm team would be relatively inaccessible for immediate call ups (2 week quarantine would presumably be required?)
It leads me to another thought- I wonder if there will be some cap flexibility granted for clubs to carry extra "scratched" players to avoid this problem. Obviously we would want most of our players still getting playing time in the AHL, but if we could park a few vets in a "scratch" pool where they have to be reactivated to play due to injury or something and didn't otherwise count against that cap it would be a huge benefit.

I thought he would get more than Bennett (2.55).
I am sure his next contract will be close to double this AAV, assuming the cap goes back up in two years.

They didn’t “do the right thing”, it’s a trade off

Yeah, exactly. I also would have preferred something like Andersson's deal, but that just was not possible under the Flames's current cap constraints.
