Thornton, who holds a Swiss passport, has been training with Davos since July. He's played for the club during the past two NHL lockouts and has 22 goals and 90 points in 73 career National League games.

"It's a great honour that Joe has chosen to appear for the HCD for a third time in his incredible career," Davos coach Raeto Raffainer said in a translated statement. "And what I saw from him in training, he is absolutely capable of helping our team athletically. His kick-off, his puck control and his pass quality is still at an extremely high level. It will be a great pleasure for all hockey fans to see him play on Swiss ice again."

Holy crap, I did not expect this route. Then again, he has boatloads of money and probably wants to live in Europe for a while. Who wouldn't?

Good on him. Hopefully he does make it back too. Would love him as our fourth line center.

I think that would be the dream (for me, anyway).

Make 10-15 million USD playing in the NHL, then go play in an awesome European city until I'm 45 and ride out retirement going to Turkey and North African coast for 75 Euro flights.

Agreed, it'd be so cool to make a bunch of money in your prime, then finish your career playing in Switzerland, just having fun. Lucky guy!

Imagine he wants to stay in shape. Probably hard to miss almost a full year of hockey in your 40's if you want to come back and keep playing.

I spoke with Jeff Shantz once about his career in Austria. Said it was amazing. His kids speak multiple languages and he got to live there for the prime years of his life. What could be better? Money’s not terrible for decent players.

Sounds like it might be short lived though.
