He's a good top 4 defensive D man and he can skate well, but he's got no offense in his game. The Flames need some offense from their D.
I hope this is plan B or C

Tanev would allow Gio to focus on his offensive game.

I like defensive D.
There seems to be a glut of options for offensive D. So this seems like a more pressing concern.

I think that makes the most sense.
Doubt that Pietrangelo is an option (but hopeful)
Barrie I can't see on the top pairing with Giordano trying to defend MacKinnon and McDavid - and although I really like Andersson, his footspeed limits him against opposition like that.
Tanev is fine - I think he can become a dependable defensive player capable of moving the puck well enough. Not a TJ Brodie replacement, but I thought Brodie was the 3rd best defencemen (arguably) available - Krug may have been the 2nd best.
I am really trying to figure out how to patch-up that Brodie hole now... this might be a decent fit.

Knew it. Had that gut feeling this was going to happen. Piet and Barrie priced out, Brodie leaving, this is our consolidation target.
