Between Valimaki and Connor Mackey, and even Alex Yelesin, this should be a tremendous year for new kids on the blue line.

I wouldn't complain if all three guys make the opening night roster.

Got to think Killington will be going all out to make the team as well.

I have no idea what the future holds for Oliver but if he can take another step this coming year and become an everyday guy, that'd be huge.

I would definitely not be happy about it, because that means unless Kylington is moved, one of Valimaki, Mackey, Yelesin or Kylington would be in the top 4 with zero insurance if they couldn't cut it.

Kylington already should be an every day guy. It was a total joke to pick up Fantenberg two years ago and Gustafsson this year when Kylington could have provided everything they did for free.

100% hasn’t been treated properly.

I am a big Kylington supporter...but that is a level of hyperbole that I have not seen in a long time. Kylington is not in the same league of what Gustafsson has consistently brought offensively in the last few years. If you need further proof, look at our PP numbers before and after the trade. I hope one day Kylington can become what Gustafsson is...I would even trade some offense for defense on either of the two.

Back to Valimaki. Love that it doesn't sound like there is a huge amount of rust...and most nhlers have also only played a handful of games in the last year...so getting an early start may allow him to make up his lost 6 months vs the field. Also love that he is expansion draft exempt.

I am excited that Valimaki is back playing. I believe he will eventually be an awesome asset for the Flames . Hope he come back close to 100% from a very serious knee injury. It sounds good.

Let’s keep in mind that the sm-liiga is a very long ways from the NHL.

The best thing that they could do for Kylington is move him to the right side where he is most comfortable. The biggest pressure on any movement of Hanifin sits with Mackey, not Valimaki, IMO. Mackey is 24, right out of college, and will likely only need one year in the AHL. It wouldn't surprise me if Hanifin sticks this year, and next year is decision time.

If Kylington can return to his roots on the right side, there’s a strong chance he could cement himself into the Flames’ long-term plans.

Kylington was a RD in every league except when he was put in the Calgary system. Much like when we saw Brodie on the right side, it makes me wonder if there is a second gear to Kylington if we move him back over.

The Kylington makes lots of mistakes story is overrated. That used to be true. But watching him play his 48 games in 19-20, I didn’t see a lot of huge mistakes. I did see some pretty exciting playmaking ability as the season went on.

My worst-case scenario for Kylington is Seattle takes him before Calgary gives him a shot at being an everyday NHLer. In Seattle, he uses his awesome tools and improved decision-making to become a great, young NHL defenceman.

I agree with the move him to the right side crowd.

Please stop putting Kylington in the press box and replacement level plugs in the lineup. So frustrating!

I certainly don't see a ton of major errors in Kylington's game, but they are there, and they often come under pressure. This is exacerbated by the fact that he gets outmuscled down low quite often, creating further turnovers and errors. He's getting better in that department, but still a long way to go.

The disappointment for me is his lack of offense. He should be a guy flying up the ice with the puck but he never does it. I suspect it's his desire to make fewer errors defensively, but he also doesn't add anything offensively now either. Overall, it makes for a very mediocre defenseman in terms of actual impact on the ice.

The best thing someone could do for him is pair him with an extremely reliable stay-at-home guy and then tell him to drive the play offensively. I can live with an error or two that needs to be cleaned up by the rest of the team if his play on average puts more pucks on net and makes more goals happen.

I don't see a top 4 defender in Kylington as being likely anymore, but I do see a 3rd pairing offensive d-man if he works on handling the physical game better/more strategically. Look at Brodie as an example of how to be a good defender when you're not as strong. Position and stick. That takes care of most of it.

actually he is in the same league.... but agree he still needs to develop better instincts but that only comes from playing

I think Kylington is holding back on letting loose offensively while he works on getting better defensively(which he has) it took Brodie many seasons before he learned to play better defensively. Kylington has the ability to be a very good top four dman but needs more opportunity ( more playing minutes), he will probably get that with another team and Flame fans will be wondering how we let him getaway

Which Defencemen do you see Kylington playing more minutes than?

Tough question to answer this off-season with so many free agents, don’t know if Calgary is willing to give him a top four role yet, but some team will and I believe he will flourish

to be fair, to play more minutes, he just needs to be in the lineup every day and if they put him at RD, that is an very likely possibility IMO.

The Flames originally did a great job with Kylington’s development. Brought him over young and played him lots in the AHL. I think he was going to get a full year in the AHL to really be the go to guy and play the power play and put up points but then injuries hit in Calgary and he was yanked up and down that season.

Since then, it’s been a series of weird decisions. When he first came up, he was quite dynamic, Friedman even talked about what a steal the Flames had on HNIC. But then they started “reigning” him in, and asking him to do things that are not Part of his skill set. They even sent him down to Stockton to work on his penalty killing because they wanted to use him like that, WTF?!? You have a guy with offensive skills, a geeat shot and skater who fits the mood of a power play specialist perfectly and you want to turn him into a penalty killer? Funny enough, they sent him down to work on his PK, and he scored a hat trick in his second game and they called him back up to sit in the press box again; how dare he try to use his skills he was born with!

It’s true, he’s not great defensively, but neither is Brent Burns or Erik Karlsson or Kevin’s shattenkirk or Erik Gustaffsson who they spend a 3rd round pick for to help the power play. Sometime you just have to live with a players deficiencies and manage them but play him to his strengths which in this case is to use him on the power play!
