Only thing he was missing was some good music playing.
I don't think he intended for it to end that way (of course the news paints him as a suicidal nutjob...) but he also knew the risk, which likely became more apparent to him as it wore on.
A lot more thrilling a way to go out than how most of us will. So many will burn through their life slowly without once abandoning all inhibitions to achieve pure satisfaction in the way he probably got to for a moment there.
Of course glad no bystanders hurt. And not advocating taking up hijacking but... having endured a sense of feeling marginalized by society for periods of time in my own life, it's like I almost get him in a way.

Yes. I hate Seattle with a passion. It smells terrible.

A mash-up of Danger Zone and Chariots of Fire would be a good fit.
It will be interesting to see what comes of this though. It’s a weird precedent. Even if you’re just dying of natural causes, do you want to die in some nursing home in palliative care or go out in a blaze of glory?

It's rather selfish. He could have killed others, he destroyed an expensive airplane, and has created a crap load of work for a lot of people, while possibly contaminating the environment. Lets hope others don't follow his lead.

True, but for everybody who thinks what he did was a jerk move, there are a lot who are in the “what a cool way to go” camp.
Maybe in the future we will have some kind of Running Man or Hunger Games type of events, but where people can volunteer and have some money given to their families or loved ones if they want.

Then there is this guy....
Quote:
A Utah man flew a small plane into his own house early Monday just hours after he had been arrested for assaulting his wife in a nearby canyon where the couple went to talk over their problems, authorities said.
The pilot, Duane Youd, died. His wife and a child, who were in the home, survived despite the front of their two-storey house being engulfed in flames, Payson police Sgt. Noemi Sandoval said.

Ya, saw that yesterday. Guy wasn't even smart enough to miss the parked car out front and didn't even make it to the house. And he knew how to fly to boot.
Compare that to the SeaTac bro who had no flying experience and commandeered a much larger plane and was successful in his stunts.

What really struck me is - who in their right mind goes to a canyon to talk over their relationship problems?

A guy who intends to leave his wife at the bottom of said canyon. I'm thinking the assault was more like attempted murder, and after failing he lost his #### and went for the dramatic 9/11 attempt

With all of the rash of Airplane crimes in the US, when will the government step into limit easy access to airplanes. I propose an airplane ban.

Ah, I meant more who agrees to go to a canyon to talk about their relationship woes? That just doesn’t sound like something that normally ends well.

Presumably, it's a park with walking trails in a canyon. No different than going for a walk in Fish Creek to talk about your relationship.

When I think of canyons in Utah, my mind automatically jumps to "127 Hours" type canyons.

i too think it is a cool way to go - until i think of the mess he left plus the destruction of property that was not his.
as an aside, it will be interesting to see what security changes are made as a result of this.

I fly on Dash 8s all the time going to Ft Mac area and back. We land on a gravel airstrip and fly low through the weapons range, it's nice to know we're in a ridiculously capable aircraft. I would never have thought a turboprop would do a roll like that with a complete amateur at the controls.
