Icon35 New York Islanders overhaul (most recent deal: Mayfield acquired from Vancouver)

The Islanders continued their offseason overhaul Monday with the trade of Duncan Keith to Carolina for goaltender Jimmy Howard.

"We save $5.74 million in making this trade, which is crucial to our plans going forward. We also create a fantastic tandem in net with Jimmy and Corey [Crawford], one that we feel rivals any in the league."

The Islanders' blueline now features a giant void on the top pairing. Who knows how that will be filled?

Thanks to Hanna Sniper for the negotiations. More deals will be coming.

The New York Islanders announce that they have completed a seven-player deal with the Florida Panthers.

To Florida:

Alexander Radulov
Andrej Sustr
Tyler Ennis

To New York:

Mikko Koivu
Jacob Forsbacka-Karlsson
Jeremy Lauzon
Roman Polak
2020 2nd
2019 4th
$1.25 million

The Islanders traded away the best player in the deal but come away with a top-flight two-way centre, two high-quality prospects -- both former second-round picks, a 71-rated defenseman, and two good draft picks.

Thanks to Florida for the deal.

Thanks for the deal - gave up a lot but wanted out from Koivus max contact so had to pay to do that. Plus I get the best player in the deal.

In the end Lauzon and JFK have not lived up to draft hype and aren’t looking to be impact NHLers. I have some other AHL dman that are similar ages that passed Lauzon so didn’t mind giving him up, JFK was harder to move but was a player Scorp wanted. The 2’d was also tough to move but I have 3 firsts in 2020 now which made it a little easier.

As reported earlier today out of Long Island, the Carolina Hurricanes have acquired rear-guard Duncan Keith from the Ney York Islanders.

Leaving the Canes is goaltender Jimmy Howard, whose position with the team had become questionable after the signings of veteran goaltenders Roberto Luongo and Kari Lehtonen was announced earlier in the day

Keith will join the Hurricanes blueline playing alongside Erik Karlsson, Shea Weber, and Ryan Ellis. "We've been trying to find a D partner for Karlsson for some time. Duncan can log large chunks of ice and has quick out passes to compliment Karlsson as we intend to make the 2 D the key to the Hurricanes play this year."

It was a big move by the Hurricanes, as Keith value is at an all-time low and had been on the trading block for the Islanders for some time. But with the Canes primary focus has been on rebuilding the organization from the ground up the 'Canes felt that they had a short window of time that they could afford a contract like Keith amount.

Thanks to the Islander for the quick deal

The Islanders announced today that they have acquired defenseman Scott Mayfield from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for prospect Damien Riat. The Islanders have also agreed to send the Canucks the next 2019 third-rounder that they come into contact with.

Thanks to the Canucks for the negotiations.
