Giving Toffoli an extension is an immediate catastrophe. I trust that Treliving has enough FA mistakes under his belt now to know that a one dimensional, 27 year old scoring forward with his best production in his younger years is a no go for a 5+ year contract.
He has to know that by now, right? I'm not against Toffoli as a rental, but that's all he can be, a new contract would be so bad.

Boston got Peverley, Kaberle and Kelly. Kaberle led the D in points in the POs. The other two took over the bottom 2 C positions and did a good job at it.
Pittsburgh added Kessel offseason, and then Hagelin, Daley and Schultz at the deadline. Kessel was first and Hagelin was 5th in points in the POs, and the top LW.
St. Louis didn’t do a mid season add but Binnington was called up mid season. They’d made their big moves offseason (ROR, Perron).
Washington didn’t really make a move I can think of.

Washington traded a 3rd for Kempny and he ended up being a great edition to their run to the cup playing in 24 games and picking up 2 goals and 5 points while playing near 18 minutes a night.

Chicago added Vermette in their last SC win and he scored some key goals, including an OT one.
But unless you win the SC, you can argue that adding players doesn’t work.
But adding a player may increase your chances from, say 5% to 6% or whatever.
The theory is that when you have a chance to win, which these days means making the playoffs, increasing it even marginally makes sense. Even the SC favourite likely doesn’t have better than a 15% chance of winning. It is always up for grabs.
Flags fly forever.

Basically the only significant player you listed was Kessel and that wasnt a deadline deal nor a rental. This is basically what I'm saying the Flames should do. Dont waste good value assets on middle six rentals. Save the assets for an impact player. O'Reilly and Kessel are good examples.
Hagelin would be the next best addition but he was a mid season hockey trade and he had three years left on his deal. Not a rental.

Stay away from rentals unless you’re pretty much a favourite, yet still need to plug a hole in the line up.

Normally i agree, but the cap room from Frolik could be used for a rental with no significant long term implications, depending on acquisition cost.

Wasn't he also rumored to be part of the Brodie/Janko for Kadri trade?
|
I thought the rumour was that Brown was being flipped to Ottawa as payment for them to retain some of Brodie’s cap hit, although that was, I think, speculation.

I think we have two “in house” options at 2RW that might be worth trying before giving up assets: Dube and Czarnik.
Dube seems to be progressing and perhaps deserves a bigger role.
Czarnik is playing well in the AHL and has shown he can at least keep up at the NHL level. Almost like a less tenacious Mangiapane but with a better shot. Plus, he’s an expiring UFA — don’t you want to see what you have before his contract is up?

I’d prefer to leave Dube exactly where he is excelling for the season. Keep that confidence and hunger growing. I do think there is a good chance he can earn that slot in training camp.

Enough's enough. The Flames desperately need another top 6 goal scorer.
Backlund paired with Monahan and Gaudreau has been a disaster most games. Even Tkachuk isn't scoring anymore.
We have 1 goal so far on this 3 game roadtrip, and are set to lose both games against bottom feeders.

I take it you enjoy mediocre hockey?
Czarnik isnt even an NHL caliber player and you think he solves our right wing problem?

I didn’t see a team needing another top 6 forward. I saw a team needing Gaudreau to do more than a little curl after entering the o-zone and Monahan to go to the net. Awful.

They need someone else on the line they have some chemistry with.
I’m not making excuses cause yes Johnny does that way too often and loses the puck but put a guy with jam/speed there cause Backs looks horrid there.

Backlund is there because Johnny and Monahan were an absolute liability on the ice without someone to play defense for them. Same reason Lindholm was there before. Put someone on their line who is more offensively focused and watch the puck fill our net.
