FWIW @thedraftanalyst had him ranked 35th overall, and 12th best winger available:
12. RW Dmitry Zavgorodniy (Rimouski Oceanic, QMJHL | 5’9, 173): Lightning-quick sniper with an excellent shot/release combination that doesn’t require much time or space to use. Zavgorodniy is an excellent skater with elite hockey sense who can sniff out eventual passing options and immediately turn an easy steal into a quality scoring chance. He may not look big, but Zavgorodniy has serious upper-body strength and will not only deliver a hit, but absorb them from bigger players. He’s as close to a complete player as you’ll find in a two-way winger listed less than six feet tall. He consistently looks for the cross-ice set-up, especially if the strong side of the puck is overloaded, and he has no problem connecting regardless of how dense the maze of sticks and skates is before him. He is extremely strong along he boards and will dangle or fake his way from a lengthy puck battle right into a prime shooting area. Zavgorodniy is a specialist on both the power play and penalty kill, and as a winger is used as the lone forward on 5-on-3 disadvantages.

From Tod Button:
smaller in stature but explosive skater
clever player with quick hands
he played the start of the year at center but we always saw him as a winger when we first saw him at the Hlinka this year.
he played wing the the Hlinka and was leading scorer at the Hlinka and real good player for that Russian team
thought he really took off when he went back to his position, he is a right shot LW.
clever skilled player

Zav-go-rod-knee.
Classic Flames late rounder. Good offensive player, but small.

Missed this one in the rest of the crazyiness on the weekend but this feels like it has the potential to be sneaky good pick.
A guy who tore up competition against his own age group at the Hilinka but didn’t quite produce as a first year guy getting used to the QMJHL and hockey in Canada. Considering he was also quite young for his draft year, and was potentially playing out of position at C there could be upside here.
Really intrigued to see what he does in his draft plus 1 season.

This pick passed me by as well. Some people think very highly of him so to get him in the 7th is excellent.

It is a minor thing, but it is encouraging to me to read that his team used him on the PK.
Seems like a pretty good use of a 7th round pick.

Zavgorodniy is an Ukrainian name which means "he, who lives in suburb/on the outskirt". The root is "gorod", which is Russian/Ukrainian for "city". Similar name to Kaigorodov if you remember that guy.

I like the philosophy of going for boom/bust guys like this in the later rounds.
Getting a Derek Dorsett in the 7th doesn't move the dial forward for your team. Might as well take a guy that has an outside shot at being a difference maker.
This kid will have the chance to play with a phenomenal talent next year.

His teammate Alexis Lafreniere put up Stamkos/Hall level numbers as a 16 year old last season.

Flames snagged another player I had in my top 100, this time at 198. That is excellent value in my opinion. Listed as playing the middle sometimes but the few times I saw him he played off-side wing and I think that's where he'll stick when he turns pro, possibly even switching to the other side depending how he is able to manage picking pucks off the boards under pressure. The struggle he will face is at this point in time he doesn't possess grinder size nor top six skill - he may top out as a Dustin Boyd-style tweener.

Ya but you can be terrible at drafting from the second round onward, just look at buffalo.

A surprising number of teams had their draft lists sorted alphabetically.

That has always been my philosophy too. Might as well swing for the fences with those late round picks. It did Detroit well for many years. You might strike out more often than not, but such is the nature of late round picks anyway.
