Damn, I remember them now, local punk band. There were a few back in the early 90's I followed along with Huevos Rancheros

Huevos Rancheros were crazy good. They couldn't find a good vocalist so they played long, inspired instrumentals. I always liked them.

Me too. Quite the odd diversion, but it's been a fun change of pace from the usual Trump insanity.

Speaking of the Dotard in Chief, he held another one of his Hitler Youth rallies tonight, and yup, he's still obsessed with Hillary.

The crowd responded with chants of "Lock her up!"

Anyway... the point is... if Emperor Dotard wants to 'invalidate' NAFTA... Canada should play right along. Go back to the pre-NAFTA standard of invalidating American Patent claims on pharmaceuticals here in Canada and allow Canadian pharmaceutical companies to replicate any drug they want. Also, charge a tariff of 25% of vessel value on any American vessels (boats) using the Canadian Great Lakes to deliver their cargo. Bend the Fanta Menace to our will. I would vote forever and ever for any party that took those steps.

Yes, good to hear from people who were part of the scene back then. I was away from Calgary for about 10 years and there are gaps in my local music knowledge.

If I can just derail the thread for a moment (or mods please create a local music thread), I highly recommend this resource:

http://www.calgarycassettes.org/p/index.html

The Index may not be loading now, but you can search band names in the search box of CCPS. You can download many recordings for free. With a band like Placebo you can see their development - at first, not very good, then much improved. This is the trajectory for many bands - I don't think you would see any bands get booed off the stage now, because the community understands and supports the evolution of these bands.

This came out recently (free to download):

Don’t You Listen?: A profile of Calgary electronic artist Tona Walt Ohama

http://theyyscene.com/2018/08/10/don...na-walt-ohama/

Finally, I hear Mike Bezzeg (of FM Moving Pictures) is working on a new project, and I can't wait to see what it will be.

Placebo were not a good band. A couple of the members had never played an instrument before they got together. They had a good singer and a hip style, and Calgary was pretty starved for both back then. So they found a niche for about 8 months. Leslie and another member of the band were roommates with my buddy at the time, and after Placebo split up Leslie was the only one who continued to be involved in music at all.

I think a separate thread is a terrific idea, lots of neat musical history that a lot of us would enjoy hearing about again or for the first time.

WASHINGTON – High-stakes trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S. were dramatically upended on Friday morning by inflammatory secret remarks from President Donald Trump, after the remarks were obtained by the Toronto Star.

In remarks Trump wanted to be “off the record,” Trump told Bloomberg News reporters on Thursday, according to a source, that he is not making any compromises at all in the talks with Canada — but that he cannot say this publicly because “it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal.”

“Here’s the problem. If I say no — the answer’s no. If I say no, then you’re going to put that, and it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal...I can’t kill these people,” he said of the Canadian government.

In another remark he did not want published, Trump said, according to the source, that the possible deal with Canada would be “totally on our terms.” He suggested he was scaring the Canadians into submission by repeatedly threatening to impose tariffs.

You just described nearly every good punk band. I pretty much agree with everything else you said though.

This is the best thread derail ever.
