Default American Politics Thread: Orange is the new POTUS [Part 2]

More ridiculous crap from Supreme Leader Dips**t.

http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-s...clinton-theory

Quote:
Donald Trump apparently saw some conservative media reports about Hillary Clinton last night, and the president wasted no time in alerting the public to the revelations.

According to the reports Trump was so excited about, China “hacked” Hillary Clinton’s email server, putting classified information at risk. The president added that the FBI and the Justice Department “better be” investigating the “very big” story.

NBC News reports today that, according to the FBI, Trump’s claims are wrong.

Sixteen hours after President Trump tweeted about a right-wing media story alleging that China hacked Hillary Clinton’s private email server, an FBI official is refuting the report in a comment to NBC News.

“The FBI has not found any evidence the (Clinton) servers were compromised,” the official said.

It’s the latest example of the widening breach between a president who traffics in unverified news accounts and the law enforcement agencies he frequently maligns.

The FBI official, speaking for the bureau, also pointed to a report issued in June by the Justice Department inspector general that examined the FBI’s investigation of Clinton’s use of a private email server.

It’s worth emphasizing for context that the original report was published by a far-right website called the Daily Caller, and the claims were amplified by Fox News yesterday afternoon.

Trump decided that conservative media reports were right; the FBI disagrees. The president could’ve consulted the vast amounts of classified intelligence he has access to before sending out his tweets; he decided not to bother.

It’s one thing when Trump’s outlandish theories are discredited, it’s something else when it’s Trump administration officials doing the debunking.

Serious question: What happens if tomorrow, say every single conservative media outlet starts running stories that "GOP corrupt, Hillary innocent", and they do so for the rest of the year? Does Trump simply shut up because he doesn't have his talking points from TV? Does he start saying Hillary is innocent? Would love to find out.

He would just dig deeper into the trash of the internet until he found sites that agreed with him.

Their viewers abandon them and find a site that will feed them what they want. Whatever springs up, no matter how horrific. They already turn on Fox when they dare criticize Trump.

Some pretty good reactions to the GOP trying to smear Beto O'Rourke by dredging up his days as a punk-rocker in the 90s.

Don't worry...the same people who told me Trump had no chance of winning are predicting a "blue wave"

Which people were those? Anybody who was telling you Trump had no chance, you definitely should stop listening to now... I can't imagine why you're still listening to them! There were loads of reasonable prognosticators giving Trump a decent (though usually underdog) chance.

Anyway, I'd recommend having a look at what experts were saying about the house race in 2016. Even when Hillary was at her highest in the polls in mid-October, no neutral observers thought the house was realistically in play unless the polls swung even further in her direction. The models were generally accurate in extrapolating national-level votes to house results, and it's to much easier than extrapolating national votes to presidential results.

But unlike a presidential election, midterm house polls aren't swingy, and especially not in favour of the president. They don't swing on single news stories the way presidential ones do. They can't get a national-level bump from discrediting a single candidate.

I think he was being sarcastic.

538 says 75% chance of taking the house at this point, which seems about right.

And also roughly the odds that Trump had at election night.

My memory may be off, but I think 538 had Trump at a 33% or so chance on election night, which though not huge is a significantly higher chance than the GOP currently has of keeping the House. They were among the outfits that gave Trump the highest chance of winning, and have since then pointed out that there was not a huge issue with polls, just how people interpret them.

I’d also caution (as I’m sure Nate Silver would) that their model updates every day and we are still a long ways out from the election. I think their model on November 1st will frankly tell you a lot more than it does now. A lot can change in three months.

Based off the last week or so of insane tweets at all hours, I suspect Trump has transitioned from coke to Adderall.

Nah, I don't think so.

It's all marketing, you could convince that segment of the population to believe loads of different things.

Fox viewers aren't arriving at these conclusions naturally and then finding a news source to repeat it to them, Fox news is capitalizing on exploitable 'feelings' and feeding their viewers the reinforcement to keep watching. Fox is telling them what to think and then people are thinking it. There were always crazies but if the John Birch Society had had a 24/7 news channel in the 50s and 60s, the US wouldn't exist as a nation right now.

If there was no fox news, fox viewers would still be crazy, but they'd be crazy in a different way, about a different topic, presented to them differently.

IMO, that's the major issue, not that a certain segment of the population is a conservative thinking write-off, but that a significant segment of the population has shown how vulnerable they are to marketing, and in a just society, should be shielded from being taken advantage of in such a way, like we now do with children and serial commercials as an example.

It's a full-blown propaganda operation.

When a Trump cultist inevitably kills journalists, I imagine Trump gets named in the civil suit.
