Trade Tribunal recinds the stop order on the Canadian Frigate replacement program.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/tra...rtin-1.4941507

This puts the Type 26 Frigate firmly back into battery with Lockheed Martin and Irving Ship Building taking the lead.

I'm still concerned that the Type 26 doesn't meet a lot of the requirements that Canada asked for during the bid process.

Liberal's are putting a Boeing clause in the bid documents for the Fighter Jet replacement.

https://ottawacitizen.com/news/natio...n-the-new-year

Quote:
The Canadian government has introduced the change to the standard procurement process with a new provision that defence analysts say was aimed directly at Boeing. The move came after the U.S. firm complained to the Trump administration that its Quebec-based competitor Bombardier was receiving unfair Canadian government subsidies on the production of its C-Series civilian passenger aircraft. The U.S. ruled in favour of Boeing, resulting in Bombardier facing duties of almost 300 per cent on sales of its C-Series planes in America.

I mean first of all they were going to pay 6 billion for 18 F-18 Superhornets or a cost of $333 million dollars per plane, which is more then 3 times that of the F-35.

Now they're putting what basically amounts to a Economic clause to limit competition to Bombardier.

I would expect that Boeing will tell us they they're not going to bid if that clause goes in. At the same time, I'm still expecting the Eurofighter to drop out over requirements clauses.

That would leave the Gripen and the F-35. The Liberals are going to corner themselves on buying the F-35 if they want the best jet available. Or buy the less capable Gripen JAS-29.

The Liberals are making a true hash out of this.

At least this way when we inevitably end up with the F-35 the feds can save face by saying they looked at everything.

What a waste of time

Fair enough, its the Jet that Canada should have bought in the first place. The one benefit of all the delays is that the cost has dropped.

Lockheed Martin expects that the F-35A which is closest to the C will cost $85 million per plane in 2019.

The Superhornet is going for $70 million per plane, which is why I'm still baffled at the $6 billion cost for 18 planes that Boeing offered.

The Eurofighter Typhoon has a cost of about $120 to $140 million per plane.

The JAS-39 is estimated at about $60 million per plane.

Israel has modified the wing structure of their F-35 which improves on its stealth capabilities.

The F-35 is moving onto the Block IV Avionics system

Also its expected that the F-35 will go into full operational production in 2019 which explains the reduction in sticker prices.

F-15E has always been my preference. Now there is F-15X. I'd take either over F-35.

The F-15X at a cost of over $100 million dollars per plane is too expensive for what it does. Its a Generation 4.5 fighter and doesn't have the capabilities of the F-35.

Its designed to backfill in an environment that contains something like the F-35 to F-22

Not that it matters, at this rate we won't have enough pilots to fly them anyway

Deal to buy used Australian fighter jets finalized

"Canada is paying Australia $90 million for the aircraft. The federal government originally estimated the purchase of the Australian jets would cost around $500 million, but Finn said that price reflected every aspect of the associated deal, not just the cost of purchasing the jets. Canada is also acquiring extra spare parts, the Australian jets will have to be outfitted with specific Canadian equipment and software and testing will be needed."

Not as expensive as I would have thought, but I still can't get behind the idea of throwing millions at aircraft that are just as beat up as the ones we currently have

I still have my doubts in terms of adding another 14 years of life to those airframes. As bad as the Conservatives are the Liberals have completely made a mess of this file.

New Navy needed, new Airforce needed, we can't have both. This is what happens when Rust out occurs.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/fig...gary-1.4969031

Quote:
The Trudeau government can't afford to buy ultra-modern warships and advanced warplanes at the same time, given the limits of federal finances, a new research paper argues.

The study, written for the University of Calgary's School of Public Policy, says that contrary to the assurances offered in the government's defence policy Ottawa will soon be forced into a series of tough, far-reaching choices about the structure and capabilities of the Canadian military.

Using the government's own figures, researcher Alex McColl concluded that the Liberals either will have to pour more money into their defence budget in the mid-2020s or scale back their ambitions by buying a less expensive fighter jet.

Quote:
"Not only will the CF-18 replacement program have to fight for funding against the general austerity and easy riding nature of Canadians, but it will also be running concurrently with the largest military procurement in Canadian history: the National Shipbuilding Strategy," he wrote.

But we can can both, however that will require spending choices be made in other areas of government which we know will never happen under this government. Or actually under any recent government unfortunately.
