The added depth would be for next year and beyond, not this season.

There is a good chance that we lose 2 or 3 this summer, from the current group of 10. So the more prospects the better.

People need to realize the Flames don't have any defencemen prospects in junior, college, or Europe. There is nothing in the pipeline for defensive depth besides Valimaki and some long shots.

Of all the defencemen in Stockton right now only 2 have NHL contracts past this year: Valimaki and Nielsen.

Nielsen appears to be a project the Flames are hoping will turn out.

Taormina and Hogstrom are UFA and doubtful to be back. Valiev may bolt to Russia. Not sure what the organization's feel is on Healey.

Unless Treliving pulls off a blockbuster trade to get a high 1st round pick any d-men they got at this year's draft are likely going to be 2 or 3 years away from pro.

They need to turn to some Euro and college free agents to give Stockton a decent d and to use as potential injury call ups with cheap ELC contracts.

Flames still hold the rights to Ollas Mattsson? Not that he is projecting to be a star but still another to add to the list

Nope, he’s an NHL UFA. He’s only signed to a minor league deal.

That’s said given the lack of prospect perhaps they’d throw an ELC his way.

The Flames still have Rafikov if he ever intends to come over. The guy who covers Russian prospects over on HF is usually pretty knowledgeable about things and he figured that he had maybe a 50/50 chance of coming over next year.

I’d be surprised as well if the Flames didn’t at least offer AOM a NHL contract at this point. He’s shown some very good play in the A this year.

That would be pretty shocking. Didn’t he not even come to a single development camp?

I've been led to believe that the team is pretty happy with Valiev and what he has done since arriving in STockton. Im sure he will be offered another contract but whether he chooses to sign or not is a different thing.

It would be pretty surprising. But if Rafikov wants to come over he will need to sign with the Flames or else get traded.

Default Flames made an ELC contract offer to Emil Djuse? UPD: Signs with Dallas

Time to start searching the globe for forwards who won’t look like they are stuck in mud in the playoffs. Enough with defensive depth signings.
