I'd love to play Ultima Online again. Has anyone tried UO Renaissance?

The first game I got into in the 90's was Torin's Passage. It looks pretty cheesy now, but I loved it as a kid.

Lots of good choices, but I still find myself playing old DOS games all the time still. Crystal Caverns, Secret Agent Man, the first Duke Nukem, Commander Keen. . . I love them all.

It's also crazy how fast these things advanced. The first Duke Nukem was 1991. Compare how that looked to Unreal Tournament at the end of the decade. Pretty crazy.

Rogue Spear and GTA2 for me.

I don't think I've put more hours into anything since RS.

Chris Sawyer made two masterpieces in the 90s, Transport Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon. I still play them today.

In terms of playing time, these were the top games for me.

1. Quake
2. C&C: red alert
3. Diablo
4. Warcraft II

Really takes me back. For me, the first game I was really into that I can remember was hyperblade. Looking at some of the gameplay videos it is amazing how I would be entertained for hours on end.

I played one of those old-school, 2D, reboot servers of UO. It was awesome! They start your guy off with 80+ skill in a bunch of catagories and you group up to do some pretty advanced hunts and pvp.

I love Red Alert. But I utterly hated the Russian V2 Rockets and the mine layer.

You'd build up this huge tank force and start your move, and you'd see the fog of war lift as about 40 rockets launched.
.

Great game.

Ultima Online second mention:

Best computer game of all time. The only true Sandbox MMO to ever come out. It was a once in a gamer's life time experience, nothing like it will ever exist again, can't exist again, given the current state of the interwebs.

I started playing at 9-10 years old! It was complex and so open. I'd play with my older bros, some guys from school, and my social sciences teacher, hah.

I can't believe it took until post #32 for someone to mention Diablo.

I thought that was the defining game of the 90s.

Ehhhh, not really. And believe me, I was big into Diablo - played it through multiple times, including the expansion (which no one seems to remember; the monk animations were super weird), played it online (ruined by duping). It was a really simple, basic game, though, with limited story and barely anything you could call an interesting character.

More importantly, though, it's completely overshadowed by its sequel - Diablo 2 is really the quintessential game of the series for multiple reasons, and would make the list here except it wasn't released until 2000. It might have a shot at best PC games of the 2000s, maybe, but again probably not enough depth given the competition once you get into the next decade.

anybody here a fan of Crusader: No Remorse? futuristic isometric mayhem...

damn that opening full motion video sequence with the sweet interlacing is giving me the Pentium 100 feels.

and then its sequel No Regret came out and I remember it being a ridiculous jump in difficulty. I couldn't even survive the booby trapped vending machines much less the actual enemy soldiers.

Carmageddon - open world, crazy physics model and a handy 'wheel spin' button.

Yep, I played Crusader. A fact I had forgotten until you posted that.

You know what no one's mentioned? Heroes of Might & Magic 3. Talk about a genre that no longer exists. That was a fun game, casually - I remember that once you got actually decent at it, the different factions were quite unbalanced.

I loved the Quest for Glory series by Sierra. The first came out in 1989 but the following were just as good.

Dude, Godly Plate of the Whale and Staff of Apoc. Boom. So much fun.

I disagree with your assessment though. It wasn't a story driven game, although it had a pretty decent storyline for a 1995 RPG. It was about grinding for gear and I think Diablo was great in its own right, but was definitely overshadowed by the masterpiece that was D2.

I am not and wasn't a big gamer, but hell I loved Close Combat.

I thought it was really well done.

I would love to play it again or find a similar quality game.

You can still buy those games on GOG.com for about $7.50 each, they also have a monstrous bundle of the whole series, but I think that's over $100.00
