Giants acquire OF McCutchen from Pirates

https://www.tsn.ca/giants-acquire-of...rates-1.968678

The Giants were said to be in the mix to acquire Giancarlo Stanton before he was traded to the New York Yankees, but now have an impact bat in McCutchen. He joins third baseman Evan Longoria as the second big-name acquisition for the Giants this off-season.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports notes that the deal is not expected to stop the Giants from pursuing another top tier outfielder this off-season, particularly Lorenzo Cain.

I have to say it is becoming annoying that this team is not at least moving one way or the other as far as off-loading assets or at least trying to improve the existing team with so many decent fielders apparently available. I'm not exactly looking forward to watching this current group of players compete when they have had next to no improvements made to an already sub-par roster from last season.

I would imagine that the market for Donaldson has now shrunk considerably to what it was a month or two ago and really hope this management group has not completely misjudged the situation.

The #Pirates are receiving pitcher Kyle Crick and one other mid-range prospect from the #SFGiants for Andrew McCutchen

That's it?

He is a free agent after 2018, and still has to pass a medical.

Ken Rosenthal@Ken_Rosenthal
Free-agent outfielder Curtis Granderson in agreement with #BlueJays on one-year, $5M contract, sources tell The Athletic. Deal also includes incentives and is pending a physical.

I think they also retained 14.5M of his salary.

Giants feeling a lot of pressure to keep up with the Dodgers.

Giants agree to terms on a two-year contract with outfielder Austin Jackson

https://www.mlb.com/giants/news/gian...on/c-265165708

Adding Jackson, who will turn 31 on Feb. 1, conceivably represents the final step in San Francisco's attempt to improve its outfield defense. Jackson gives the Giants a legitimate center fielder, though Steven Duggar -- their No. 5 prospect according to MLB Pipeline -- will compete for playing time during Spring Training. Former Pirates star Andrew McCutchen, obtained in a trade last week, is expected to play right field. Hunter Pence, San Francisco's regular right fielder since he was acquired from Philadelphia at the non-waiver Trade Deadline in 2012, will play left or become the fourth outfielder.

Thome, Chipper, Vlad Guerrero and Hoffman inducted to the HOF

they will join Jack Morris and Trammell in Cooperstown in July

Edgar Martinez just missed the cut

glad to see Vladdy going in although he will probably don the Angels cap. likely the last Expo (although Larry Walker isn't quite dead yet)

a large class with 6 inductees, including 4 from the writers

Vlad is my favorite player of all time. Most unorthodox as well. Good to see him get his just dues.

Hoffman was a beast in his time and not many relievers have gotten in thus far, so good for him as well.

as far as baseball goes I am a big stats guy and I fully appreciate that by some metrics (that I respect) Vlad doesn't quite measure up (at least to get in quite easily for a 2nd ballot)

but even a sport like baseball isn't just about stats
his stats are damn good but more than that he was so watchable...like a few articles said today you sure as hell didn't change the channel when he was up to bat

he was fun
he had swagger
he did the kind of things you tell your grandkids about

there is always room in the HOF for guys like that and well there should be

I think Walker should make it. His numbers say he should imo.

On the fence about Edgar, superlative hitter, but not playing the other side of the ball diminishes his offense.
Are there any other DH HOFers?

I believe Frank Thomas followed by Paul Molitor are the two with the highest percentage of their ABs as a DH, Thomas is over 50% and I read somewhere Molitor 40% of his ABs? not sure if that is a true stat

Edgar would be the first 'real' DH, Ortiz looming too I guess

my opinion is a full time DH even if not in the field at all, will have more opportunities over the course of the year to affect outcomes of games than a closer

Edgar's offensive output is legit for sure

I think Ortiz will get in and he will be the first guy who played the bulk of his career as a DH. Maybe once he gets in Martinez maybe has a better chance.

I think Walkers issue is Coos field. Nobody takes Coos Field numbers seriously.

however Martinez' eligibility will expire before Ortiz comes on the ballot

Edgar goes in next year

Walker is starting his slow climb but he's going to run out of time

It is interesting just how many guys are still unsigned at this point, but I think it's more about market correction after a run of years where some truly disastrous contracts (Heyward, Fielder, Pujols etc...) were handed out more than some kind of collusion.

Yeah, I agree. Probably a number of factors including you can pick whoever you want from the Marlins to fill your need.

Sports, in general are probably going to see some market corrections over the next couple years. Baseball was always the most likely to lead that correction since they have a lot more control over salaries than the capped leagues.

Next CBA will be very interesting. I wonder if there will be a push from the players to get UFA status earlier. You think about a guy like JD, and he'll do well when he gets to UFA next summer for sure. But if he were UFA two years ago, he probably makes even more money. So what would the owners want in exchange for giving up control? A franchise tag? Non guaranteed contracts? Should be interesting.
