Drinking in Public in Calgary, I'll drink to that!
https://globalnews.ca/news/4854707/l...-picnic-areas/
Quote:
Should Calgarians be able to drink in the city’s parks? Whatever your answer, the city wants to hear it.
Between Jan. 17 and 31, Calgarians are being asked to offer their opinion on the possibility of allowing alcohol in designated picnic areas.
“If public response is positive, a pilot project could be launched this summer, allowing the city to fully assess the impacts and decide whether to allow liquor on an ongoing basis,” officials said in a news release Wednesday.

Yes please.

Of course. Ridiculous that it's even a question.

Seems sort of pointless to make it only at picnic areas and only to be consumed with food.
People who make rules when it comes to booze in this country must just be floored when they travel the world.

What constitutes food? I like a slice of lime with my rye and coke...

I thought it was cool in Germany until I noticed every sidewalk and road seemed to have smashed beer bottles all over the place.

When I was in Europe recently, I definitely enjoyed drinking a couple beers in the park more that I disliked having to step over the odd broken bottle. I'd be ok with open alcohol allowed everywhere like they do in Europe but with the stipulation that it cannot be in a glass container.

This is a slippery slope to allowing the devil's lettuce to be consumed around children playing at the park.

I don't think it's a good idea. Sure, at a picnic, most adults will have a few beers or a few glasses or wine or whatever. The problem is there will also be times when there ends up being a big party, with lots of drunks, loud music, broken glass and general all around rowdiness. Not a good mix with families trying to enjoy the park.

Except being rowdy and breaking glass are already, and still won't be allowed.
Drinking in public isn't a problem, being a drunken ass in public is a problem.
And the kind of people who are going to be drunken asses, generally aren't too concerned with the legality of having a few beers at a picnic site.
Ultimately, this doesn't really affect me. My wife and I already pretty regularly bring a bottle of wine along on picnics to public parks, and we aren't jerks so it's never a problem, but I like the idea of changing these laws so that adults, who are acting like adults don't have to worry about the possibility of having to dump out a bottle of wine should a cop wander by.

I mean I was just at Oktoberfest and didn’t recall seeing a smashed bottle the whole time there. There were definitely empties around garbage cans though.

One of the most eye-opening experiences I've had about Canada was when I was helping open a wine shop in BC and we had to meet with several members of the liquor control board.
Before the meeting I tried to engage a couple of inspectors in conversation about wine, I figure they've dedicated their careers to alcohol, they probably are pretty knowledgable, right?
Nope, complete teetotallers. It became immediately apparent that most of the people involved in liquor control, licensing, regulation believe that alcohol is a vice, that society would be better off were it completely banned, and that due to the unfortunate fact that so many people are weak, the consumption of alcohol must be strictly and severely controlled and restricted lest something horrible happen to "the children."

Really hope this is a step towards allowing liquor anywhere in public.
Nothing better than buying a beer at the 711 in Thailand and strolling down to the beach, or sitting in a park.
Even the rare night I go out I feel like a delinquent when I carry a roadie.

We rented a site last year and had a big-ish event. The groundskeeper seemed fine with our concealed drinking. The loud music, littering/mess, and bothersome patrons were the ones in the kids birthday next to us. Kids were running all through our site and even trying to take our football, etc, with no parents in sight.
Ban families in parks?

I wonder if this means they’re going to reconsider letting softball teams have a beer while they play? They obviously should, as that was so ridiculous in the first place.
