Default 2020 NHL Draft Thread

June 26th in Montreal, the next group of kids/superstars will be drafted:

Lafrenière has 39 points in 16 games

Byfield is 6’4”, skates like Larkin and has 31 points is 16 games

Holtz/Raymond/Nybeck are tearing up Sweden, Lundell is putting up points in Liiga

Marco Rossi has 19 points in 8 games and nobody even thinks he’s a top 10 pick

There’s even a German, Tim Stutzle, well on pace for the best ever draft season in the DEL

And Askarov, the best goalie propsect of potentially the decade is also there

That’s not to mention Drysdale/Barron/Perfetti/Zary/Amirov

This draft is stacked and that’s just the top half of the first round

Yup as I said.
It wouldn't be the worst thing to have an off year.
Just don't trade that pick Brad.
Don't do it! No Brad. No.

What is the failure slogan this year? Inpetness for Alexis?

Even if the year is a disaster we'll end up with the 6th pick at highest.

The cycle continues.

Byfield. Absolutely incredible. #1 on my list. Total pipe dream, but damn, what a stud he's going to be.

When it comes to the Flames drafting, the slogan is usually "be a mediocre team for pick 16!"

I would like to see the team get as much possible for Hamonic and Brodie and see if they can somehow move up in the draft. Trading up is easier said than done seeing it almost never happens but this team really needs a proper blue chip forward or defenseman.

Trading up in the draft to get an elite player is easy, you just have to find a team like the Flames who are usually willing to trade down.

To get an elite player typically you are talking about moving into the top 4 or top 3.

Teams rarely move down from that spot.
Historically trading up in the draft to get an elite player is not easy.

In fact it has almost never happened. What Burke did to get the Sedins is one of the best examples.

The timing of this thread, as Bill Peters would say, was elite.

Even with an off year I don't see the Flames getting into the top 10 barring a trade. Worst case scenario is miss the playoffs and still draft 10-15 in the 1st round.

Yeah even if a worst case scenario of missing the playoffs happens it's highly unlikely the team drafts higher than 13. This team isn't that bad as they have simply hit the wall in a cycle dating back 5 years where they make the playoffs then miss the playoffs the following season, rinse and repeat this being year six means they are on the down side of the cycle where they have missed playoffs unless this core of players can show us they are better than their history shows. Still you should be able to find good players in this area of the draft as there are plenty of elite players in the league that were drafted outside of the top 10 and it's up to the GM and scouts to find them.

Flames won't win the lottery (let's be real here) but if this is a lost season - and its too early to say that - then they have a ton of assets they can sell at the deadline which would bring back a bunch of picks. Volume would be fine considering they've done a decent job of late with later picks.

Way to early to say that, but I think that we all get that sinking feeling. Yes lots to trade away for picks, but that seems like a rebuild attitude. I would love to see one or 2 moves and a re-tool if things are the same at the deadline. Hopefully things will turn around.

And I for 1 believe we could win a lotto pick. Really we have to win something at some point right??

Lose anywhere(/any way?) for Lafreniere

I guess I need to know how to pronounce it but either works.

Finish anywhere to get the guy a few spots behind Lafreniere

(Sorry Granteed, just wanted to make that more Flames applicable)

The Oilers tend to be a lot better during years where the draft is strong.
They don't get these memos.
