Phaneuf had 5 seasons in Calgary. If you remove the bias of his attitude, the way he left, and the rest of his career, he certainly deserves this vote. He was a bonafide #1 d-man during most of his time in Calgary.
Rookie year was one of the best in NHL history for a defencemen. 8th in Norris votes.
Sophomore year was 50 points and a highlight real of hits. 6th in Norris votes.
Third year he was a Norris finalist. 2nd in Norris votes.
Fourth year wasn’t as good but still 12th in Norris votes.
Fifth year was bad and he was traded. Still got 16th in Norris votes though.

Yep. Also Phaneuf was 3rd in Calder voting behind Ovechkin and Crosby.

Yeah, what a difference between years 1-3 and how exciting he was, and how it all went downhill so fast, him being at odds with Regehr, Warrener, Iggy etc, and basically having to be removed from the team

That’s one hell of an accomplishment considering the career of those two. It’s amazing that he didn’t have a more illustrious career considering how he started.

I remember Daryl Sutter talking about how banged up he was in his 4th season and that they should have shut him down...but all other dmen were injured. I suspect his hip ailments started that season as he really was never the same after that.

Yeah but Kristian Huselius was also third to Dany Heatley and Ilya Kovalchuk. Sometimes number three is just a giant drop off. Just like Crosby going first and Bobby Ryan going second overall.

If Brodie is worthy of the 7th spot all time on the Flames list, how is their not an up in arms thread about resigning him or an overwhelming disgust at a trade to bring in Kadri?
In my opinion other than the older guys I have no idea about, I do not see how he sits above Housley, Dion or even Hamilton. Bouwmeester and him even just not home grown.
And if games played is valued, that is like placing Backlund over Gilmour.

Why do we remove his attitude and the way he left from the equation. A guy like McCrimmon gets bonus points because he was a winner and was a major piece to winning the Stanley Cup. Phaneuf was one of the reasons that Flames slid back into mediocrity after being a pretty good team from 2004 for a few years. This is why I have trouble voting for him on an all time best Flames team - especially when there are so many good choices.

Pleasantly surprised to see McCrimmon taking this round. A tremendous defenceman, and an even better personality.
The next round will be a very very interesting experiment on tenure vs per-season impact.
