My understanding is the #FlaPanthers actually encouraged Luongo to retire instead of LTIR. They not only save $3.6 million in real cash salary, but the $1.1 million cap recapture is negligible compared to wrangling with $5.7 million on LTIR.

I believe Luongo has had operations on both of his hips in the last year... in his farewell letter he cited this:

"Since I had my hip surgery a couple of years ago, I've been showing up two hours before every practice and three hours before every game to work out my hip. Even at night, whether it was the night before a game or even a night off, there I was rolling out, doing strengthening exercises. My entire life revolved around recovery, strengthening and making sure I was ready to go the next day."

Entirely possible that he could've used that strenuous recovery process as justification to go on LTIR.

working to confirm though!

My point is that in the past some players have talked about "retirement" (in generic terms- Pronger did) , but in fact 'retired" due to injuries and placed on LTIR, and not filed the retirement papers.

I was enquiring whether or not Luono was talking about actually filing retirement papers, as the tweet was largely meant to be funny.

Now, since my post, there has been some info that has come out that Luongo is indeed retiring and recapture will be paid.

LOL, I wonder if Vancouver will feel the same way.

it does sound like LTIR would have been an option.

But Luongo is leaving a lot of money on the table. Good on him.

Dammit, why couldn't he wait until after July 1st and the Canucks had signed a lot of big contracts?

Many Vancouver fans on Reddit are having a good cry about the cap recapture. My exclusive sources say that many of them are convinced the Canucks could appeal and have that penalty removed since it was a retroactive rule change... even though the Canucks themselves signed off on the change.

Uh oh, always-the-victim-Canucks-fans won't be happy. I sense a riot coming soon.

My all time favorite goaltender growing up besides Brodeur. He the reason why I became goalie in the first place.

Imagine how salty they would be if their team was actually competitive and the $3M cap hit actually meant anything. As it is, as a bottom of the barrel team that $3M doesn't hurt nearly as much as an it would to a real contender

Lord knows if it was happening to us I would be.

But it isnt and is adversely affecting a direct rival that I loathe so instead I'm going to have a hearty chuckle at their expense..

One of the best goalies to never win a cup

He was so good with the fans here, he has fantasy football he still does with groups of canucks fans on twitter

What hes done in florida has been so good for the community

I suspect he will be involved with media in some way

Congrats on an amazing career Roberto

If you had just waited to have the actual information, instead of trying to be one of the first to post, you wouldn't be getting flack. Working to confirm makes you sound like you're Bob McKenzie, with inside sources, and this is some huge secret that's not out yet.

You could have just gone to the capfriendly website and pulled up this: https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-c...roberto-luongo

You could have referenced this article from 2016: https://theprovince.com/sports/hocke...-cap-nightmare

You could have referenced a tweet like this one: https://twitter.com/risingaction/sta...48325688713216

Those are all publicly available pieces of information. Instead you posted that you thought it might be something, and you were "working to confirm". With a daily post count that is only dwarfed by Locke and crunch, you can afford to take a few posts off, before just jotting down the first thought that comes into your head.
