Hartman is RFA with arbitration rights.
Pitlick has 1 year left @ $1mil before UFA.

Philadelphia acquired Hartman from Nashville at the deadline in the Simmonds trade.
This trade seems indicative that Hartman has lost a lot of value leaguewide since being acquired by Nashville from Chicago for a first-rounder and more.

That or teams are afraid of what he might get in arbitration.
Remember teams can't walkaway from awards of less than ~$4.5 million.

I think those two might go hand-in-hand. Hartman's realtime value has decreased substantially, but teams are afraid that an arbitrator might look at faraway historical data in determining a decision.

Is there much reason to think that a player with a career high 31 points, lifetime career 89 points, is going to get 4.5M in arbitration?

No.. but the Arbitrator may award him 3.0M and the team can not walk away from that. They will be forced to pay him that amount.

Good move for Philly capwise. Best not to pay 3rd/4th liners. Pitlick is the cheaper option, and I'm not sure he's even the worse player.

Another post-Oiler bump in value.
The Oilers are the NHL’s version of Kijiji where you can find value from second hand assets that the original owners are too stupid to maximize value from.

John Shannon was raving about the Oilers depth of Defense prospects, which are a joke compared league wide. At best their average.
Pitlick, Oesterle, even Petry are examples for how they can’t develop anything.
What’s Holland going to actually change?
Maybe he won’t let a guy like Pitlick slip away for nothing, but he’ll do it by overpaying him a wage closer to Petry’s.

Not that weird. They didn't want to get locked in by an arbitration award.
Going to gamble now they can get a deal done before another team can sign him.

I'd take Hartman here for sure.
Especially if we move Frolik and need more RW depth.
