Default Calgary Flames All Time Roster - #7 Defenseman

So some details ...

1. Calgary players only
2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required
4. I'll label them by rank (3rd line LW) but don't select the player that matches that role the best, pick the best player.

Day to Day

We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.

I'll post a summary as we go along.

Calgary Flames All Time Roster

Gary Roberts - Joe Nieuwendyk - Jarome Iginla
Johnny Gaudreau - Doug Gilmour - Theo Fleury
Matthew Tkachuk - Sean Monahan - Lanny McDonald
Alex Tanguay - Joel Otto - Joe Mullen
Hakan Loob - Kent Nilsson

Al MacInnis - Mark Giordano
Gary Suter - Robyn Regehr
Paul Reinhart - Brad McCrimmon
D7

Miikka Kiprusoff
Mike Vernon

This one is pretty hard

Macoun vs Brodie vs Phaneuf

Macoun with the playoff success and tenure. Brodie more current with tenure, Phaneuf with more production, less tenure and a bad taste exit.

Tough one ... going to let this one marinate for a while.

Between Macoun and Phaneuf, I went with Dion. When he was a Flame he was one of the best dman in the league. The trade and what happened in TO soured Flame Fans, but wow those first 3-4 seasons!

Phaneuf again. He was a beast during his time here.

I have been persuaded by some of the arguments about Phaneuf in the last thread. His career after the first three seasons went into a tailspin, but while Phaneuf was with the Flames he played at a level that would certainly place him among the Flames' greats.

It's also really saddening to think that him being overplayed by the Flames in his third season could have been what resulted in his hip issues and changed the trajectory of his career.

One of the most electrifying players to ever wear the jersey.

I was at this game. The guy was non stop action.

I think it was also against Minnesota when Phaneuf went end-to-end.. can't say I have seen any other dman do that very often.

Phaneuf was very elite here at one point. Very electric and polarizing player. Left in a bad way and wasn’t as good after he left, but he was a Norris runner up and an all star team guy, with 3 seasons where he had 17+ goals while being one of the biggest hitters in the game

Macoun likely my favorite remaining but I guess in then end I want Brodie and Macoun on this team the same way I wanted Backlund and Conroy or Pepper- good players with nice tenure but with higher end options still on the table- I can’t ignore Phaneufs early impact

I chose Macoun, but it was a toss up between him, Housley and Phaneuf.

OK you guys swayed me to Phaneuf from likely Macoun.

Like all three defensemen, but I just can't eliminate Phaneuf under the reverse argument that I voted for McCrimmon.

Shorter tenure, but impact.

Phaneuf's sour end makes it tough for me to vote for him.

Macoun was a beast and always under-rated defenseman. He gets my vote.

Brodie all the way for me. Life-long Flame drafted in the 4th round and is now a top pairing defenceman on the best pairing in the NHL? He belongs there.

I hope we re-sign him.

Macoun was an excellent defenceman for a lot of years, if Risebrough wasn't such a moron Macoun should have spent his whole career here. Underrated with great stats for such a defensively responsible player. Dion was flashy but I wouldn't trust him to defend a lead.

I can't believe Phaneuf has some traction here.

Controversial player but has to be Phaneuf. I just can’t leave one of his first three seasons off a best player list. Others have been more consistent for longer, but none can match 07-08 Phaneuf.

JayBo is the best player in this list. Or Housley.
