Flames Dustin Wolf named WHL & CHL goaltender of the year

https://whl.ca/video/whl-announces-e...emorial-trophy

Quote:
The Western Hockey League announced today Dustin Wolf, goaltender for the Everett Silvertips, has been named the recipient of the Del Wilson Memorial Trophy (WHL Goaltender of the Year).

The honour for Wolf marks the fourth time in the previous five seasons that a goaltender from the Silvertips has won the award.

In his third season with the Silvertips, the Calgary Flames prospect continued to shine between the pipes. Through 46 games, Wolf compiled a 34-10-2-0 record, 1.88 goals-against average, .935 save percentage, and posted nine shutouts.

Among WHL goaltenders, Wolf led the way in GAA, SV%, and shutouts. He was tied with divisional rival Joel Hofer for the league lead in victories.

The 6-foot, 165-pound product of Tustin, Calif. continued to stifle opposing offences throughout the regular season. From January 17 to January 22, Wolf compiled a shutout streak of 147:47, including a pair of shutouts against the Seattle Thunderbirds. In 21 of his 46 games, Wolf allowed one goal or fewer.

His 2,713 minutes ranked as the sixth-most among all WHL goaltenders this season. The 1,316 shots faced by Wolf this season were the 10th-most among WHL goaltenders. The Silvertips selected Wolf in the fifth round, 104th overall, of the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.

For his WHL career, the 19-year-old Wolf has appeared in 127 WHL regular season games, compiling an 88-31-4-2 record, 1.85 GAA, .934 SV%, and 20 shutouts. Wolf pre

Well done.

A long road lays ahead, but give him credit for the accomplishments along the way.

Sure would be nice if one of these decades a goalie prospect would pan out.

A lot of forgotten goalies have won this, but some real good ones too.

Price, Hart and Kuepper to name some good ones.

4 times in 5 years for Everett? Who is their goalie coach?

Yeah, that's pretty incredible, whether it is the goalie coach or the overall team structure that leads to this success.

Or simply having back to back outstanding goalies on the team.

This guy.

He's worked with Wolf for quite a while and the Silvertips brought him aboard a few years ago.

No surprise, but still great news. He had a dominant season. Not sure what lies ahead in his future but he's looking like fantastic value for a 7th round pick so far.

Flames haven't had good luck historically developing their own goaltenders but this is as positive a start as a recently drafted goaltender could have so for now at least the arrow is pointing up.

I wonder if we should draft another goalie this year. Wolf is still 3-5 years away. Parssons may or may not turn out. I think Gillies is done with the organization.

I wouldn't be opposed if they like a guy. I've always thought of goalies as guys you draft every two years, though.

Next year:

NHL
Rittich
Talbot? or other backup

AHL
Parsons
Zagidulin

WHL
Wolf

I think Wolf has two years left in junior. I'm not sure what happens with Zagidulin but I think we'll know by summer 2021 whether he looks like an NHL-calibre goalie. If so, maybe they promote him. If not, he likely bolts. In any case, I think we see Parsons and Wolf in the AHL by then and the time will be ripe to add another guy to the system.

What makes you think Wolf has 2 years left in junior?

So at worst we trade him for the the next Vlasic. I’m okay with that.

Well he has two years left of junior eligibility. Whether he returns as an overager is to be determined. If the Flames feel he has more to prove in the Dub and isn't ready for the AHL, it's possible he could return for his age-20 year. It's also possible they give him a year in Kansas City.
