Don't quote me, I could be wrong, but I don't think it would affect it one bit. The lights are based on how the flares react to Earth's magnetic fields. The suns magnetic fields shouldn't make a difference, as long as we get the flares, which we would.

Oh no, I was wondering more if whether the event of the magnetic poles reversing would cause some massive discharge of energy from the sun that would result in some nice northern lights displays.

Ahhh, gotcha. I really don't know. All I do remember is hearing that the phase we had just before the most recent flip was a lower than average period of solar activity (I think). As far as if the flip creates a storm immediately after, or if a certain polar configuration increases activity I really don't know. I don't recall reading anything like that, but I will admit, I hadn't read a bunch about it. Just a bit when comet Izon was preparing to pass the sun.

Saw some towards the east about 5:30. Seem to have gone now, but might be worth a look if you are on your way out.

Heard reports that they're visible from NW Calgary, can anyone confirm?

From what I heard, not very visible in the city. Outside the limits, might be pretty good.
Just saw an iridium flare in the W sky.

Could see them in Airdrie but only because the neighborhood was pitch black due to a power outage - they were not very bright and didn't seem to last long.

They were awesome last night. First time I've seen them from near downtown. It must have been spectacular in darker areas.

Just got back from taking the dogs for a walk... a little dim, but there. North east from Bonavista.
