Hey all, I'm off to Montreal from the 17th to the 21st.

What MUST I see?

Strippers, smoked meat, crumbling infrastructure, and Old Port.

If they're still alive that is definitely on the cards.

If you can make it out for the week leading up to the F1 weekend it's an amazing week. The city shuts down like our Stampede.

I went to the first ever game at the Bell Centre. I can't imagine how awesome it is during playoff time.

I haven't been there in 18 years so I doubt any of my information is relevant anymore. Had some fun in the bar sections of town, they have a ridiculous subway system there, seems to go everywhere. There was a live jazz restaurant called Biddles that I remember being very cool (apparently now called the House of Jazz according to wiki).

Definitely eat at Joe Beef. One of the best meals I have ever had.

Schwartz's for smoked meat.

The Biodome at Olympic Stadium is pretty cool.

Ziggys Pub is an awesome dive bar.

If you're into clubbing, Stereo is pretty crazy. Nothing like rolling out a nightclub at 9am to make you question your life.

Third for Schwartz's Smoked Meat

despite this place being a dive, we had our friendliest experience with the cooks and staff there.

and the smoked meat is the best in Montreal too

I thought Schwartz's was average. I preferred main deli on the plateau. Check out st viateur for Montreal bagels, and for sure some of the great French style restaurants (Calgary has nothing similar) like le pied de cochon (all of my spellings are probably wrong)

Definitely spend some time in that neighbourhood (le plateau), food choices aside.

Old Montreal is pretty cool cause ... It's old. Like really old. Le local was a fav place just at the edge of old Montreal. There are a million good places around there. They call a patio a terrace and some of them are tucked in little corners and are perfect dinner with the wife spots. Make reservations.

Notre Dame Basilica (sorry probably butchered the spelling)

Is a really cool spot, religious or not. I found it absolutely fascinating.

Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal. Agreed, it's one of the more beautiful church interiors I've ever seen. It's also in Old Montreal so you're likely to be in the area anyway.

I'm in complete agreement with all of this. Le Main is, IMO, much superior to Schwartz's and is much less busy. It also happens to be right across the road from it.

Fourth nod for Schwartz's. Don't miss it. 100 years of tradition and still the best smoked meat I've ever had. There's a reason it's lined up all day. Definitely preferred it over main deli.

The shuttle bus from the airport is $7 and drops you at most major tourist destinations. The metro there is great and gets you anywhere you need to go.

A lot of great advise so far. I'd check out some local magazines and see what kind of music and shows are on when you're there. So many great places to dine and a lot of culture to explore. You'll have a blast.

^^^^^ This for sure. Though when I walked by yesterday, Dieu de Ciel was undergoing some serious renos. Not sure when it'll be back open. Great beer though.

Downtown=Eat at Kazu. Drink at Grumpy's. Visit Place des Arts. Visit the Old Port for sure, but avoid eating/drinking at any criminally over-priced restaurant located there.
Walk up Mont Royal through the McGill campus and take pictures at the top. On Sundays, vast amounts of people gather and play drums. Nearby LARPers fight with cardboard weapons and real armor. It's a bizarre spectacle.

Tour down St. Laurent for sure. Either smoked meat place is pretty good though you'll want to nap right after you eat it.

Make sure you see Jean Talon Market and when you are in the neighbourhood, eat at Triple Crown Dinette. It's insane. They'll make you a picnic basket that you eat in the park across the street.
