Icon55 Sam Reinhart signs 2yr, $3.65mil AAV

Quote:
The Buffalo Sabres and restricted free agent Sam Reinhart have agreed to a two-year, $7.3 million contract, according to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie.
Reinhart posted a career-high 50 points in 82 games last season and tied Jack Eichel for the team lead with 25 goals.
The 22-year-old has played parts of four seasons with the Sabres after they drafted him second overall in 2014.

Seems a touch high for a bridge given the numbers, but I know nothing.

Sure impacts the leafs and nylander if they were considering a bridge.

Edit: actually has better numbers than I thought and has been consistent throughout his entry level.

3,650,000 AVV doesn't seem too crazy.

Wanted our Sam over Sabres' Sam at the 2014 draft. Now, not so sure.

Yeah it's a good deal, even if he only stays as a 20 goal / 45-50 point player. And he's still an RFA at the end when we have some big contracts coming off the books at the same time, if he does progress and earn a bigger deal.

Maybe some hope for our Sam as this Sam started slow in his career as well.

I doubt it, their Sam plays over 17 minutes a game on the top line, our Sam played 14 minutes a game on the 3rd line last season and looks to be on the 4th line this year.

Uh... bad example. They were drafted next to each other and both came into the league the same season.

Bennett:
15/16 - 18-18-36
16/17 - 13-13-26
17/18 - 11-15-26

Reinhart:
15/16 - 23-19-42
16/17 - 17-30-47
17/18 - 25-25-50

Reinhart has had the better ice time and linemates. However he has performed with them, while Bennett has struggled to earn that ice.

Not quite sure I see the correlation. Same draft year and his worst year was better than Bennett's best. And 42 to 47 to 50 is a pretty linear, reasonable progression.

However, Sam Reinhart is a special case this year. After a very slow start to the season, he was near a point-per-game player from January onwards (29 points in his last 30 games). 3.65M for a 50 point player isn't going to handcuff the Sabres, obviously, but 3.65M for a point-per-game player would be huge.

No disagreement there. Reinhart a way better player.

There was a lot of talk last year though when both Sam's were struggling of Sam for Sam deal for change of scenery. Oddly, a lot of Bennett fans were against it and not sure why. One recovered, one didn't. One is a lot better.

Neither Sam has lived up to their top-line potential but Reinhart is clearly ahead of Bennett. Not sure why anyone would laugh at this deal. He had 25 goals and 50 points. He’s at worst a solid 2nd line player. That’s a great deal for Buffalo if you ask me.

I have been consistently confused as to where top line potential came from. In the year heading up to the draft it was billed as weak with top talent, but deep with the quality of players dropping off slowly. Most early draft previews I read had Bennett, Draisaitl, and Reinhart all listed as only having second line potential. From my perspective the exception from the draft is Draisaitl overcoming their skating issues and becoming more than a second liner.

The coaches keep trying to play him at center when it's quite clear he's not going to cut it at center in the NHL, but is actually pretty good on the wing. He's also got some solid chemistry with Eichel. If a coach would just keep him on Eichel's right side for the year (and both stay healthy) I don't think a 30-30-60 campaign is out of the question.
