I'm a huge advocate for roundabouts, and I think that location actually lends itself well to one. But... there is definitely something wrong with the placement of this one. I drove through there yesterday and couldn't believe how close it cuts to the front of those homes, and actually narrows the path in front.
Roundabouts are great, even there. But I think that the city messed it up and could've/should've put it a little bit more to the south. They'll eventually erect an ugly concrete barrier after the second or third car ends up in someone's front door.

How can someone mess up a single lane traffic circle?

I'll just use the 29th Ave entrance from 16th and go home using 32 Ave to Bowness Road.

That's a great solution! Both ingress and egress for me, I'll have to remember that.

it's been a cavern for the past 2 years. I thought it was going out of business back then.

Surely it wasn't any worse than any of the other Toys R us's, was it?
That's a big hole in Market Mall to fill.

Golden Inn was forced to close early on their last day. Strange sign appears, I haven't quite figured out what it says in Chinese but people are debating if it's saying it's a landlord dispute or if the boss just didn't supply enough inventory to stay open until the last day.

The English sign on the reddit says the restaurant will close when they run out of ingredients, which is understandable, it's their last day.
The Chinese sign says the landlord is heartless and force them out.
I guess it is that the owners are forced to close because the landlord is jacking up the rent. And with rising cost of everything, it is not unreasonable.
So is it because the owners getting old and wanted out, or is it because the rent increase is unbearable? Maybe it is a bit of both....

Had lunch and took a walk through the University District today. I'd say this is turning to become the best-planned community in Calgary. What a beauty!

I've been through a few times over the summer and it seems very well done, and successful so far based on the number of people I saw. Given it's been a beautiful summer weather wise but between the people living in the area and the proximity to the university and the 40 000 plus people who frequent the area and it seems like a winning formula. I think the only downside IIRC is some CP's have commented on the lack of cycling infrastructure which does seem a bit odd given the location.

The area has come along very nicely, but yes the cycling infrastructure is non-existent.

They don't have any designated bike lanes on the roads in the area but I thought that most or maybe all of the sidewalks were designed to be multi-use in University District. I ride my bike down the sidewalks there all the time.
On the University District website it states that it is designed as a walking and cycling community. Neighbourhoods and parks are connected by a 12km path system.

Which is all well and good until you get to intersections. I'll keep taking the road when I ride through there. Cycle tracks would have been an easy get on those wide new roads.

I am not even talking about all the new buildings - although they do look very nice. The sidewalks - this is what impressed me the most, to be honest. I can't recall a single community in Calgary with sidewalks this wide. They were full of people, yet didn't seem crowded. The green area behind Save-On-Foods, kids' jumping fountain area, dog park. And noticeably all ages out - young parents with small children, students, middle-age, seniors - a very rare sighting for the majority of Calgary neighbourhoods.

I was really impressed when I checked it out a few weeks ago. And as a bonus, it was like 30° and there was nobody at the ice cream shop on a summer weekday afternoon.

One additional thing that seems underrated and nice about what is happening there is that it seems to be able to offer some of the inner city/downtown vibe with significantly less concerns relating to congestion.
The underground parking and parking lots on the outskirts of that area seems like it will keep the vehicle vs pedestrian traffic in the area from getting too chaotic in the long run. I haven't had a need to use either of those yet, but as pedestrian and vehicular travel to the area increases, I am optimistic that the current vibe can continue to be maintained.

I live a 10 min walk away. Off leash dog park is great. We take our dog there every day. Save on Food underground parkade is awesome in winter.
Now living there is another story. $600k for an apt condo?? lol
