That’s a nice acquisition for the Caps. Hagelin has playoff experience and is a responsible vet out there on the ice.

Hmmm, things seem to be picking up steam. I imagine Stone has probably informed Ottawa of his intent now, so probably things will start to move even more starting tomorrow or Friday.

Hagelin is a ping-pong ball between Metro and Pacific paddles.

I would have liked Swagelin in Calgary but I think Mangiapane can do a good enough job down the stretch which would be who he'd replace anyways.

Didn't I read on Twitter that Jaskin got waived?!

How do you waive a player then trade him before he clears?!

A spokesperson told the media that Jaskin got waived, but it was announced that Smith Pelley was the one who was actually put on waivers.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
With the waiver maneuver WSH did today — first saying Jaskin would be on waivers and then switching up by putting Smith-Pelly on — it’s pretty clear they have something in the works, but until Smith-Pelly clears or gets claimed at noon tomorrow, said trade can’t be completed...

I'm still a bit surprised by the whole Smyth-Pelley thing.. he was incredible for them in the playoffs last year physically and got on the score sheet with some huge goals.

They dump him for nothing and IMO, upgrade only slightly with Hagelin by giving up a 3rd..

I believe that was a reporter mistake. He wasn't on the ice because of the trade, so the reporter was incorrectly told it was because of waivers. Devante Smith-Pelly was pulled from practice and put on waivers.

If it is a one for one deal, why is it dependent on DSP completing the waiver process? Cap related?

DSP has a $1 million cap hit and Jaskin is $1.1 million. Hagelin's cap hit is $3.75 million.

The Caps have enough cap space to add approximately $950,000 in cap hit to their payroll right now.

Washington will need to either make an additional move before this can be finalized, or LA will need to retain some of Hagelin's salary.

DSP is a playoff performer, I’d consider scooping him up at that cap hit... for free, off waivers, I suspect a playoff bound team will take him, I hope it’s the Flames

looks like Friedman was wrong about Jaskin being involved

Seems like a steep price but I guess you're hoping you get good playoff Hagelin that showed up twice in the past 5 years instead of 4th line Hagelin who showed up 3 of the past 4 playoffs.

Seems like a lot of conditions for a measly 6th round pick

Jon Rosen @lakingsinsider
Conditional 2020 6th based on WSH playoff success and games played, per Kings

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Condition on the 6th Rd pick in Hagelin deal: Caps must win two rounds and Hagelin plays in 50 percent or more of any two rounds combined. So could be rd 1 and 2. Or 2 and 3. Or 1 and 3, etc. If those things don’t happen, there’s no 6th RD pick going to LA

I'm actually surprised there aren't more deals like that in the NHL. You're essentially placing added value on the player adding value. It's a sort of win win for both sides?

This seems reasonably cheap for Hagelin at 50%

It’s starting to happen more and more, with more specific conditions. I think GMs are just getting more creative within the confines of the cap and the competitive cycles we see.
