As a hockey fan, TB put on a clinic
I had the good fortune to go the Oilers vs Tampa game in Edmonton right before Christmas. Edmonton got slaughtered, it was awesome. Kucherov had the quietest 5 point night, I barely noticed that he played but he still had 5 points.

Another quiet 4 points tonight.

Another game where a skilled team pushes us around with little answer.

Anyone who says we do not need to get tougher in our middle 6 is mistaken

It would also come as no surprise to see us acquire a #1 goaltender before the deadline

Look at the quality of opponents played before the break. Look at how many of them we faced on back half of a btb. We were winning all of them pre break but we should have. The Flames were mostly at home against poor teams. Now they’re facing better competition and have a lot more road games. I hope Peters lays into them and gets them back on track. Unlike Tampa they can’t just win on skill alone, they need to work hard and play responsibly.

Brodie seems to lose focus or panic in big games like this... He was just doing weird stuff like all those backhand no-look passes right to the TB lightning forwards. He just needs to chill out and make smart plays and stop hurting the team.

Boy it doesn't take much of a losing streak to tumble in the standings. Jets also passed the Flames tonight.

That was hands down Frolik's worst game as a Flame

Accidentally turned on the radio. Steinberg is an idiot.

You don’t talk about 6 goals on 27 shots this game without putting more attention on context. Stupid guys who live and breathe stats.

I really don’t see any goalie in the league letting in less than 5 of those, and easily in the up 6-8 range.

Also saying shot attempts are misleading. No. Tampa blocked a ton of shots. It is a counting stat that is what it is.

i didn't see that...

i saw a team much faster, higher compete level, one that contested every pass, got sticks in the lane and never gave them time and space

washington had a more physical game, but even there, calgary didn't back down from it.

too many passengers tonight... can't rely on one line against a team like TB

Three things stand out to me:

1) Toughest part of the schedule for the year. The timing looks off (except the power play goals), and I put a huge part of part of that on the all-star break, one game home-stands, odd breaks between games, and crazy travel/time-zone changing the Flames are enduring right now. It doesn't get much better for them this month either. Going .500% would be a win based on schedule alone.

2) Big Slump Dave is looking a bit lost in the net, probably partly because of point #1, and also likely has something to do with the transition between backup and starter not being handled very well this year.

He's not mentally dialled in and he's not tracking pucks as well as he had earlier this year. Athletically though he seems fine, which is a good sign. His reactions are quick and when he's tracking pucks he's gobbling them up. He's not flopping around like Smith, although he is starting to creep back in his net, which is always a sign of low confidence so hopefully he kicks that habit quick.

The good news is all this subpar performances are really making his contract more palatable come the off-season. The bad news about that is I'm less certain every bad game that he's the horse to hitch the Flames Stanley Cup dreams to. I still think he's great, but I need to see him take a game over again like 2018.

3) I do think the Flames need to add both up front and on the backend if they want to compete with a complete team like Tampa Bay for a Stanley Cup. I think I'd push in all my chips and buy Kronwall, Kreider, and Howard (or some equivalent bolstering).

Well his agent was partially correct. Frolik may end up getting run out of town but due to his own play and nothing to do with Bill Peters. You can argue Frolik could have been a healthy scratch for the past few games now yet he's still on the 2nd line and playing horribly. Time to look in the mirror.

This game was mostly about effort not skill or grit or lack of.

We saw a different game. Things are heating up even the last game had no physical intensity. Top teams have that imo.
