Smith was actually quite good last night and made several big stops to keep the Flames in it during the 2nd and 3rd periods. They lost because Jones was in God mode and they couldn't convert on half a dozen grade A scoring chances.

That being said, Smith vs. Pettersson is a recipe for disaster. Rittich should definitely get the start tomorrow.

I get that they feel they need 2 goalies going which is probably why they keep going back to Smith. I just hope that they realize soon that he is not that guy. Sure, he won a bunch of games but they were against bottom feeders. He's not good enough to play against contenders.

The team needs another goalie before the playoffs start.

I don't believe this for a second. When the coaches have talked about the goalies and their workload they talk about managing Rittich's expectations and his state of mind. Smith continues to play because they are wary of over-playing their first-year starting goalie. Peters has a history of running a pretty even split between his goalies, and I think what has happened this season is no exception.

I don't buy any of these rumours about practice problems with Rittich. It has been highlighted his work ethic, dedication and attention to details are some of his best attributes. I think they pulled him simply because those were two horrible back to back goals. First one was completely on Rittich. The second one though.. Had he stayed in the net, it would have been Burns (Sharks' number one choice in shootouts) with a breakaway. He stays in the net and Burns scores, it's not a weak goal and Bennet is the one to blame. But I think what got Peters' triggered was another bad puck play from Rittich. He gave the start against the Caps to Smith because he thought his puck playing would help, in other words doesn't trust Rittich's ability to do that. And I can't blame him, Rittich is brutal sometimes when he tries to channel his inner Smith.

I think Rittich got pulled because of how Rittich looked after that 2nd goal. He skated into the corner and it looked like that goal really bothered him. When a goalie isn't mentally focused, especially after a bad goal (nevermind 2), you yank him. I bet that if he just stayed in the net, got a sip of water, and looked a bit more 'cool', he wouldn't have been yanked. Just a guess of course, but I actually did think that Peters was going to yank him after Rittich skated into the corner and looked 'off'.


However, I am not really worried. I am sure Rittich will just be back in the next game or two, and be the goalie that he has been most of the season. It was nice to see Smith doing well in net in relief. He gave the Flames a chance to win that game, if not for the mighty heroics of the other netminder (as well as the Sharks all collapsing in, around and even behind Jones).
