I think a player’s approach and performance in practice counts for a lot more than we realize. Especially a younger player like Rittich.

This. It's why I try to not get too upset at the "why is he on this line, why didn't he make the cut in camp, why was he sent down" etc etc. Play during games is a big factor but practise and a players approach to it matter. Speaking generally of course, no idea how it factors into Rittich and starting next.
As for Hamonic.. what a beast. He's been a monster all season long but has had a hell of a go on the ice due to injuries and even off the ice, when his young child was sick. Despite all that he gives it 100% every shift. No wonder Islander fans loved him.

Has that been reported or a guess? Decent theory don't get me wrong, but I wondered if we've been hearing this as well.

I take Peters at his word - he didn't like what he saw from Rittich. I think he watched Rittich after the soft goal and when he saw the misplay of the puck it was, to him, a sign Rittich's focus wasn't there. So he was proactive.
I think it would have worked fine except the next chance was a great one that went in. If Smith gets a couple routine stops in the Flames maybe start the turnaround earlier.
Plus, they could have won anyway, given the number of chances.

Getting yanked after 2 goals.
Normally a coach will allow a guy to work through it after that 2nd gaffe which was entirely on him.
To me this had the earmark of a coach who already had the player on a short leash for some reason, and that certainly wouldnt have been based on his last game.
Practice matters so much to coaches as thats where they can make the biggest impact on their teams and when a guy or guys arent displaying what is asked of them, the boss gets angry.
Nothing unusual really.

Peters has been pretty consistent in statements about how guys appear in practice. Can't quote him, but it seems to me those comments have been made at various times in pressers - not necessarily about specific players (yet?) but about lines or team play in general.

If Smith starts tmrw I will be pissed. BSD on an off night is still miles ahead of Mike Smith. You have to give your starter a vote of confidence here.

I think I agree with you, but this prompted me to go back and listen to Bill Peters's post game PC. Here is what he said about Rittich:

BTW, in that same scrum Eric Francis attempts to corner Peters into propagating the same narrative he was manufacturing in the first intermission:

I think they will stick to whatever their plan was for Vancouver before yesterday.

Hamonic is not on the ice. The ice is on Hamonic.

One thing we know about Peters is he doesn't lose any sleep over a goalies feelings - just ask Eddie Lack!

I'm glad he's back. But I want him to be ready for the playoffs. It does the team no good if he's pushing too hard down the stretch, only to be hurt for round 1. I have a horrible fear of that happening.

This is a legitimate fear, but there is still a lot of time between now and the second week of April. I would bet that Hamonic will be given the last few games to mend at the end of the season.
