For a puff piece he makes some compelling arguments. Plus, facing only 3 playoff teams over the next 10 games is a great chance to put some serious distance between the rest of the pack.
Go Flames!

He is right. Most of the top 10 cup contenders are in the east and I like the way we matchup with teams for our first two rounds. Super important to win the division
A team like Toronto might have to go through Boston, Tampa, Pitt/Wash to get to the final. That’s an insanely tough path.

I don't like it. I wish the Flames were flying under the Eastern media's radar. I guess it's part of the bargain when Johnny blows up a bunch of Eastern Conference teams

He made a bet and is paying up, this article wouldn't have been written otherwise.

Can I ask why? What difference does it end up making?

What's interesting to me is that I bet he still doesn't believe it, but is good enough at his job to write a credible article supporting the Flames as almost favorites to make it to the finals.

The sign of a truly good team is winning while under the weight of expectation. At some point, that's a challenge the Flames have to face too.

*Assuming Rittich is legitimately decent for us these coming playoffs.
Salary Cap wise the Flames are set for the foreseeable future too...
With the 83 million cap, that's 16 million remaining to re-sign Dubé, Mangiapane, Bennett, Tkachuk, Rittich and back-up.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Bennett
Frolik - Jankowski - Neal
Mangiapane - Ryan - Czarnik
Dubé
Giordano - Brodie
Hanifin - Hamonic
Kylington - Andersson
Välimäki - Stone
Rittich

Dube is on an ELC through 20-21. That said, I think $16M is actually pretty skinny, depending on the Tkachuk and Rittich/backup deals.

It's only going to take a single prolonged slump by the Flames for the Knights and Sharks to pass them in the standings. As good as the Flames have played the Sharks and Knight have been even hotter of late.

While entirely true, it will only going to take a prolonged slump by either of those teams for the Flames to distance themselves from VGK and the Sharks as well.
Calgary is going to lose games between now and seasons end. So is everyone else, but the advantage the Flames have in that scenario is what they have already done this season and continue to do so.
There is no question though that the Flames, of late, have developed a couple bad habits that have to be stifled before they become common place. Practice is where that is fixed and this club has a nice set up moving forward to get lots of practice time in to address those issues.
I think it boils down to Big Save Dave. If he continues to play as he has and the club can limit Smith/backup starts by winning the games BSD is in....they will be fine. Of course injuries and such will play a huge role in all this as well but assuming those all even out somewhat as well, i think its a safe bet they will be hosting their first playoff game in April.

That's true, but at this point these teams have put considerable distance between themselves and everyone else in the Division. It is looking like Vegas, San Jose, and Calgary will be the 3 Pacific teams. But still a lot to sort out with the Wild Card teams and how Winnipeg and Nashville fit into the top 5 teams out West. I think the difference between top and second Wild Card team could be significant, and it's going to be a Central team which will have travel involved.

I call shenanigans. That is far from the most fawning Flames article ever written.

If you get rid of Frolik and Stone... that opens up an extra 7-8 million right there.
Tkachuk will get around 8.0 million.
Bennett should not be getting anymore than 2.0-2.5 million. If he wants more, then he can be a great trade chip. It's similar to what the Hawks did all these years as they paid there top guys who won the cup and traded others who wanted money.

Why would Tkachuk get the Draisaitl special contract? I have a hard time believing he's going to get that much money from Treliving. I like what he brings but to me he's not an $8 million player.
