Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Yeah, they did Kulak a solid and cleared the road for our prospects a bit but its too bad the Flames couldn't get, say, Montreal's 6th in 2019 instead.

Kulak was outplayed By Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington, and Prout. Glad he won’t be taking up a roster spot

GOAT!

According to CF.com, one of the two was the third-highest scoring D in the AHL last season. Don’t remember which, and too lazy to figure out which of the two is actually a defenceman.

I wonder though how many 6th round picks don't even end up as career AHL players.
Either could continue to progress into something... I don't mind getting 2 more prospects vs. magic beans.
Granted maybe throwing him into a package for something could have been a good idea, but there clearly wasn't a wealth of interest for him since he cleared waivers.

Though this seems like they're helping Kulak out by giving him a better opportunity elsewhere. This likely happens regardless of arbitration.

Habs get a passable depth defenseman with some, Flames save money and get more AHL depth, Kulak gets an opportunity elsewhere. Reasonable deal all around.
I thought there might be trades pending, since there wasn't an announcement for the last cuts despite the roster clearly being set. Wouldn't be surprised if Treliving was looking for a spot for Lazar too.

Taormina.
He was the AHL defenceman of the year in 16/17 when he put up 60 points in 70 games in the regular season and 20 points in 22 games in the playoffs with the Lightning's affiliate.
Guy is quite good at putting up points... in the AHL.

Good plan. Get rid of our depth so we're thin when we get injuries.

Those two are not NHL players. They belong in the minors.

Another fold to this trade is that the Flames will have one less contract to negotiate next year. Next year presents itself as the first tricky year in terms of fitting players under the cap. They will have to re-sign Tkachuk, Bennett, Rittich and a number 1 goalie.
Promoting Valimaki gives the Flames contract control for 3 years.

I don't like the idea of trading away depth, for when the inevitable injury bug hits.
But I think Kulaks days were numbered.
The Flames must be comfortable with what they have in Valimaki, Andersson, Prout and Kylington.

Forever a Flame?
Seriously though, good luck to Kulak -- has a good chance to stick in the NHL someday but it wasn't going to be here...
