Goodluck to Kulak. There is way to many other dman in the Flames organization who are waiting for their turn.

This really opens the door for Andersson, Valimaki, and Kylington this season to get some NHL games.

With the losses of Stajan and Bartkowski, the Flames organization was getting dangerously low on guys named Matt.

Kylington's path to the NHL got just a little easier. He'll be the number one guy on the heat with no left hand D a head of him on the depth chart.

To much depth on the Flames blueline. I say good on the Flames to move him to a spot where he will likely get more NHL minutes

Kulak has passed through waivers twice and an expansion draft

we couldn't give him away but some wanted a pick

Taormina is a lifetime AHL'er and veteran, kind of the same way Rod Pelley was last year. Valiev was Toronto's 3rd round pick in 2014, and was traded with Kerby Rychel to Montreal last year.

Guessing that Kulak asked to be traded. Probably didn't like not playing in either of the final two pre-season games.

Is Stockton lacking depth on D?

Business decision?

R. Valiev - 350k AHL (Two-Way)
M. Taormina - 80k AHL (Two-Way)
B. Kulak - 900k (One-Way)

900 - 430 = $470,000 savings

Would've rather kept Kulak but I think the relationship between Kulak and the Flames was damaged by the arbitration hearing and subsequent waiving

Good luck to Kulak. This is a good move for him, he should have a spot on the 3rd pairing there and in all honesty his days with the Flames were numbered. The end just came faster than expected because Valimaki is apparently further in his development than expected.

Return is okay I think. Valiev has some potential and Stockton really needed a defenseman like Taormina.

Flames save some money here. Kulak was on a one way deal, these guys aren't.

Montreal going to be inclined to call him up so I think this is a good deal for Mr. Kulak.

In terms of return the Flames AHL D is fairly shallow this year. Adding depth might help AHL development as a whole, especially for the young goalies, Parsons and Gillies.

They do a solid for a guy who makes too much to be in the AHL, but would have played there, and is a hair too good for that league, but couldn't make the Flames and was not claimed for free.

Yeah, that's my guess. Flames save money/Get farm depth and the Habs get the best player in the deal and open up a reserve list spot.

Steinberg on 960 says he knows the Flames were close to trading Kulak to the Habs in July around development camp but the deal wasn't consummated at the time.

Figured something like this would transpire. Move out a spare part for some minor league depth.

Clearly we're posturing to trade for Plekanec...
