I think OEL is a bit better defensively than Brodie plus OEL will be a massive upgrade at point on the PP.

He had a hell of a goal last night against Edmonton too. Recency bias but still, nice goal.

OEL is a player that our management is very familiar. My concern is the $8M per he will require on a re-sign. He could and should push Gio down to the second pair.
Brodie, Bennett + is a lot to give up though.

Reason: Wrong pair for Gio initially

I have always said OEL is the most underrated D man in the NHL because he is stuck in Arizona. I think on a good team he is a guy that can get in that Norris conversation with his ability.

I wonder if we can get them to eat Brouwer's contract as part of the return? That would help with the cost of re-upping him.

Ok, I know they aren’t the same player at all, but I just had the worst Jay Bouwmeester deja vu when I read this post.

Would Brouwer waive to go to the worst organization in the league next to Edmonton? Perhaps just to eat playing time but no lock. Also adding Brouwer requires assets to be added on our side.
If no Brouwer personally my offer would be Brodie and Bennett as maximum. If we add Brouwer then we likely need to kick in a Kylington level prospect as well.

I would offer Brodie + Bennett + Brouwer and tell Bartowski that there's only room for 1 B on the team

I think the difference between OEL and Brodie is slim, imo. It's our offense that we need help with, and the funny part is that the answer is literally from our farm team. We just don't want to sit veterans when they have been garbage.

i'd be very tempted to do something like Brodie/Bennett for OEL.
The only hinderance is that he's a UFA after next seasons, and if we could afford him.
STOP... no. I still don't think the issue with the defense is the players, but rather the way they seem to be deployed at their own blue line on the rush, and positioning in their own zone during pressure. Can this really not be fixed through closer detail given to the defensive systems???

Trade ideas:
CGY/ARI
- Bennett, Brodie, Frolik
+ OEL, Duclair, the ghost of Dave Bolland
CGY/TOR
- D.Hamilton, F.Hamilton (naturally)
+ Nylander

I'd do Bennett and Brodie for OEL in a heartbeat. Not sure if that trade exactly would get it done but I do think it's a good starting point.

Would do that one. Doubt Arizona does though.

Rather add Marner over Nylander. Would also think the Leafs need to add a 2nd as Dougie for Mitch one for one heavily favors Toronto.
That Arizona trade is steep with Frolik added. I would want a pick (maybe our conditional pick from the Smith deal) Duclair is a nice add in and I could seemthe Yotes moving on from him

I think some of you are undervaluing Frolik. Great player.
With that said, given his age and Arizona's timeline to compete, they likely wouldn't view him as a target in a trade.

I don't normally comment on fan proposals but yours is fair but as said you would have to subtract Frolik from the Arizona deal and the Leafs would have to offer Nylander/Marner + a prospect or high draft pick for Hamilton.

Ashasx:I threw Frolik in there to make the money work, but really you have to give to get and as much as we love throwing Brouwer into trade proposals that just isn't going to cut it. Frolik is a smart valuable player that helps them compete now. As for any timelines they may have, its a bit out of whack in Arizona as they valued players like Hjalmarsson & Goligoski.
