Payless shoes to shut down 2500 stores
https://twitter.com/user/status/1097913309083435011
250 stores in Canada.
This will put 2400 Canadians out of work.
I think the question is going to be about the survivability of traditional retail spaces.

Random 70s looking malls across Canada have just lost their best tenant.

Isn't Payless basically what Winners already provides?

I don’t think it’s due much to ecommerce; I think Caleres has around 10% of online sales? More than likely it’s just the result of an incredibly competitive budget footwear market.

As a parent of two girls, Payless probably saved us thousands of dollars over the years - dress shoes, casual shoes, choir shoes, athletic shoes, sandals, ... the list goes on.
Winners selection doesn't hold a candle to Payless. Walmart worked in a pinch.
Our girls are old enough now that they are buying their own shoes at other establishments, but I feel sorry for new and future parents who will have to shell out more for shoes that will last months, let alone a full year. Sorry to see you go, you served us well.

Ordering shoes online seems like a terrible idea.

I order almost all of my shoes online. The major companies are much better these days at standardizing their sizes. I wouldn't recommend ordering dress shoes, unless you are familiar with the brand. Most companies have easy return policies.
I'm not sure why anyone would shop at Payless, when you can get an equivalent brand name shoe on sale for the same price or cheaper. Not that branding is everything, but a lot of the stuff at Payless is genuine crap, both aesthetically and in terms of quality.
Overall, I think society should move to a retail model that has as few middle men as possible between producer and end consumer. I get why some may still like the physical stores, but I find that I get a much better idea of quality/fit of products from online reviews and Youtube videos.

You would think, but for me it's the best. I have a few brands I like and as they wear out, I just reorder more. Size 15s are hard to find otherwise.
I don't find Payless to be that cheap, though, so IDGAF they're closing. For my kids, they seem like crap quality for more money than Wal-Mart and barely less than name-brand shoes at Sport Chek or Shoe Warehouse.
I think they're closing because they offer a bad product at not-very-cheap prices.

If your feet correlate to an average US shoe size you should be pretty good especially if they have narrow vs wide options. I've ordered a fair share online and have had no issues.

Hell, the only reason I actually ever went in there was specifically because nobody actually shops there. Makes it faster and easier to buy things like the syrup bottles for Soda Stream.

This is true about lots of things lately. The quality of the no name budget product has gone up and the quality of the branded midrange product has gone down. So your sensible options are cheap and replaceable or real high end.
