I know Carrie Underwood skipped Calgary for Edmonton and Lady Gaga will do the same in August/September. It's a real issue. It's 2017, this shouldn't be happening in a major city.
Yup. And now I have to go up there twice next summer for Guns N' Roses and Metallica.

thanks, just submitted.

But admittedly, one thing I'd like to learn more about and am hoping some know here more than I do, is the corruption and bribery allegations with respect to the IOC still an issue?

Or am I getting that mixed up with the World Cup / FIFA? I could have sworn reports about Olympic Committee corruption as well. Would this not be a concern for Calgary as well?

Prepare for IOC dedicated lanes to the airport!

In jest, but wasn't that a requirement for sochi?

At this rate, IOC may just be happy with Calgary even putting in a bid.

Calgary has a big plus with the existing infrastructure and apparently (rumour has it) the preliminary figures show the financials make a good case for this being a healthy Olympics.

This. The 2024 summer Olympics now only have 2 cities bidding, Paris and Los Angeles.

If Calgary does put in a bid they will have a very good chance at hosting.

This means that for the second-straight time, there will only be two cities in the final competition for an Olympic bid (Los Angeles and Paris). The same thing happened with the 2022 Winter Games when Oslo pulled out of the bidding after being named one of the three finalists.

The IOC will make the final decision on 2024 in September.
I wonder how Trump might affect LA's chances.

I'd think Paris winning would bolster Calgary's chances by virtue of a desire to finally have a games in a North America time zone again.

I have heard rumours that the IOC behind the scenes is being quite accommodating to Calgary on requirements.

Very disappointed. 😦
IMO Budapest had the strongest bid of the three.

Frankly, if Calgary puts in a bid for 2026, we are nearly a lock to get awarded the games.

The bid for 2022 came down to winter superpowers China and Kazakhstan.

Beijing will be hosting its second games in 14 years.

Honestly, Calgary should bid for 2026, with the condition that we also get 2030.

Hell, go all in and host ALL Winter Olympics from here on out.

Going old school like the ancient games. One location, to rule them all.

In all seriousness, the idea of a rotation of say 4-5 cities, with a new one thrown in once in a while might make a lot of sense.

Strongly disagree for every option. Eff the Olympics.

And we don't need a shiny new arena just because lame acts that haven't had a hit since I was in preschool and charge $100+ for tickets skip Calgary.

And honestly, Kazakhstan couldn't truly be considered for something like the Olympics. Not yet anyway. I've been to Almaty a couple times and they really don't have much for hotels. They have nice new facilities for sport but the rest of the city is still very much under development. The main freeway through the city is pretty much always jammed during rush hour.

The city itself is really something though. It's gorgeous and interesting. If they keep working at upgrading their facilities and infrastructure, they'll get their chance.

2026 would be great. My Daughter would be old enough to enjoy them as well. Might even bring on a lifetime hobby for her. Would definitely take the week off.

What did they sell to make out like bandits?

I'm 100% rooting for no one to bid on 2026. Would be fascinating to see what would happen in that scenario. Would it just go right back to Beijing? Would it be cancelled? Would the IOC actually have to contribute money to beg someone to host? Would love to find out.
