I haven’t been following the Wranglers much. For those that do who do you think are the most NHL ready forwards?
|
Forward prospects
1. Pelletier
2. Honzek (If he can return to post injury play)
3. Stromgren/Kerins/Mortin
I don’t count Duehr as a prospect.

-Morton is 3rd star, with 1g, 1a, and even. 15gp/3g/9a/12pts,+2, 0 PIM.
-Klapka is 6gp/4g/2a/6pts,+6, 22 PIM.
-Stromgren gets 3a, and was +3, to bring him up to 15gp/2g/8a/10pts,+4, 4 PIM.
-Solovyov gets an assist, and was +3. He is the Wranglers' top-scoring D, and 19th in the AHL with 11gp/3g/5a/8pts,+10, 4 PIM. He is also tied for 3rd amongst blueliners in plus/minus. The next highest-scoring D on the team is Aspirot, with 5 points in 12 games. Kuznetsov and Poirier each have 5 points in 15 games.
-Honzek gets 1a, and sits at 5gp/1g/1a/2pts,+2, 4 PIM.
-Also getting points were Hunt (2a), Klapka (1g), Aspirot (1g), Silye (1g), Pelletier (1a), Ciona (1a).

Yeah the Flames/Wranglers have done a solid job of putting an incredible team on the ice every year with a mix of prospects and tweeners.
They've been one of the best AHL teams since moving to Calgary.

So where does Stromgren as a left wing, slot in? I suppose he'd eventually be a Coleman replacement on the third line who can play up on occasion. Coleman has another two years on his contract.

I really think the team has hit three homeruns in a row when it comes to coaching at the AHL level. I guess that would be Brad Pascall’s domain.

I saw a post-game clip where Trent Cull was discussing the 8-3 drubbing at the hands of the Henderson Silver Knights. Said the team was unprepared, including the coaching.
The next day they beat the Knights 4-0.
I know there was some skepticism when he was brought in, but it appears the doubts are subsiding.

Can anyone comment on Kerins skating? Say he was to keep up this pace - what would the main concerns preventing him from making the jump to the NHL?
Is Poirier making any progress getting back to where he was heading before his injury issues? Always a fav dark horse prospect of mine

Somebody else who watches the Wranglers more than me can comment, but these are my thoughts on Kerins:
-In junior, Kerins displayed rather average skating- it was kinda stiff, with deficient acceleration and a need for an improved top gear. I think these days it looks better, but still around average for the pros- he's still not a burner, but he's ok in that department. In the games I've seen, it's been fine.
-The main issue in years past, according to some of the comments from the coaching staff, might have been Kerins' conditioning. He reportedly showed up to camp this season in better shape.
-Kerins to me looks like a purely opportunistic player, rather than a facilitator- which can be good or bad. He's still willing to go to the greasy areas to get opportunities, he's still playing on the inside, and he's going to the net- which is good, as that's what a goal-scorer needs to do in the pros. I just worry about how one-dimensional his offense is, and how well that will translate. Does he battle along the boards, or in the corners to win pucks for his teammates? Not much from what I've seen, and he lacks the size and strength to win the 50/50's consistently.
-One of his strengths in junior was that he was a pretty decent two-way player, and while I can't comment on his performance in this area in the AHL too much, he is second in the league in plus/minus (I know, it's a useless stat). That could also mean that the coaches are using him very judiciously.
-There is hope, as he's only 22 and his birthday is in April.
-Another ray of hope is that in his final year of junior, his D+2 year, he was 2nd in OHL scoring with 118 points (43 goals) in 67 games- which was 39 points more than his next highest scoring teammate.
Just my opinion, somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

I know these guys are pro athletes so relatively all in decent shape but Kerins looks built like a dude who's eaten too many twinkies.....or is that just me? I thought there were comments about his fitness in camp.

Hes always been a slow starter at the pro level, so maybe there is something to that. Not sure if thats the issue though.
Not sure where he spent his summer, but this off-season it should be in Calgary.
Rasmus Andersson was able to turn it around. A high scoring prospect like Ryan Howse wasnt able to get his pro game together.
