Doesn't help that a fair few ties were already decided by the time the mixed match rolled around.

Why dont they put the mixed doubles in the middle?
Plus it's a long day, i can see why the top players don't want to play one match then sit around for hours.

Okay, this format for the city finals of the United Cup is disastrous. All five ties over one day - who thought of this?

I think it was only shown on WTA TV - At any rate, Bianca lost to Kudermetova 6-4 6-0. It's early and she's with a new coach to start 2023, it might take some time to figure things out.

Okay, I didn't realize Bianca lost 12 games in a row - That's right, she was up 4-0 in set 1. Yeesh.

She's basically an irrelevant player until she can get her serve together. Really unfortunate to see such a downfall from her early peak.

I was in-and-out of the Shapo - Safiullin match (watching WJHC action between Canada and the States), but Shapo advances 6-4 6-3. That's the good news. The bad news is that he will likely face Djokovic in his next match.

The Canadian ladies went 1-1 overnight in Auckland as Rebecca Marino lost her match in three sets while Leylah almost pulled off the double bagel winning 6-0 6-1. Leylah next takes on Ysaline Bonaventure who defeated Rebecca.

You have to feel bad for Emma, another injury (rolled an ankle) forced a retirement and the Aussie Open is coming up shortly.

It really is sad that Bouchard and Andreescu seem to be on similar trajectories of going from great early career success by the age of 20 with top 5 rankings and Grand Slam Semi-Finals and Finals appearances...to really flaming out from a combination of injuries and development.
Hopefully Andresscu can find her game again and avoid the fate that Bouchard had.
